THE PRINCELY WAY
AN EPISODE OF’ THURSDAY. Two Southland women had good cause on Thursday to bless the accidents of officialdom. Both were present at the Show grounds for the purpose of receiving decorations; that had been awarded to sons that had been killed at the front. One woman had lost one son in the war and the other five. When they went to the Show grounds they were unfortunately directed to take their seats at the top of the stand and during the presentation of medals they were not called down. When they actually reached the ground from the stand the presentation had concluded and they were told that it was impossible to remedy the unfortunate oversight. The effect of the error on the part of some unknown official somehow came to the notice of the Prince of Wales and he quickly put at rest any thought that remedy was impossible. A military escort was detailed at his expressed wish to convey the two ladies to the Grand Hotel and there he presented the decorations under circumstances that more than compensated for the disappointment that the recipients had experienced earlier in the day.
