LONDON, May 20. f Received May 21, 7.35 p.m.) Mr Winston Churchill, speaking at the opening m the military tournament, said now we had gained the broad sunlight of a victorious peace we had to maintain on the scale of the Army before the war a small defensive army for Imperial poiice duty and to keep alive those traditions which generations hence might be the means of enabling our various communities, usually unprepared, to escape disaster. The Navy must always remain on a mobilised scale. The Navy had always been and always must be strong enough whatever happened to enable all our ether deficiencies to be repaired.
AN ERA OF ECONOMY. EXTRAVAGANT BUYING ON THE WANE. LONDON, May 20. (Received May 21, 7.35 p.m.) The post-war period of extravagant luxury buying and enormous profits shows signs of ending. The verge of the busiest season finds West End business men anxious to unload heavy stocks, fearing the possibilities of the economy craze and a consequent slump in buying. The increasing dearness of money contributes to the downward pressure. The managers of hotels, restaurants, and shops indicate that high spending will soon be confined to the new-rich. Modistes declare that women in the highest social positions are cutting down their dress expenditure bv two-thirds.

The Government have offered eleven acres behind the British Museum as a sire for the London University. It is worth £1,000,090. The national finances will not permit the Government to provide the premises. SIR THOMAS MACKENZIE’S BANQUET. MANSION HOUSE GRANTED. LONDON, May 20. (Received May 22, 1.15 a.m.) The Lord Mayor has granted the use of the Mansion House for the banquet to -Sir Thomas Mackenzie.
