The North Otago J.C.’s Winter meeting jpened to-day in fine weather, but a bittercold southerly wind prevailed. There vas a fair attendance. FOOTBALL. GALBRAITH SHIELD COMPETITION. Th e rain overnight did not make much impression on Rugby Park and the surface for yesterday’s games was firm although a laifle heavy. STAR (3 1 v. INVERCARGILL (nil -. (Blue and White). (Blue and Black). Teams. —Star —Backs: LiUey ; Muir, Brown, Murray; Oughton, Brown, Oughton; forwards: Smith. Sparks, Liliey, Adum*on, Aitken, Hall, Leggatt and Agnew. Invercargill—Backs: McKay; Sutton, Tracer, Lyttle; Lopdell, Vial; Cleland; forwards: Rice (3 1, Todd, O'Bcirne, Garrett, Webb, Fougere and Forrester. Star kicked off against a fair wind and the kick was poorly returned. Star immediately attacked and were soon on Blues' line. From a scrum near the line Star received the hall, Oughton sending out to Brown anti he to Oughton who was tackled. Blues now took a hand and a fast forward rush took the ball well into Star territory. From a penalty, Blues had an unsuccessful ■hot at goal, A series of line-outs ensued where Blues marked, the ball being punted ever the goal. From the kick-out Blues immediately attacked and some hard play ensued in Star’s twenty-five. McKay miskickwl, and fast following up by Smith saw Star attacking. At this stage a severe hail ■torn, kept the players from being overheated. Fast, interesting play up and down "the iield saw Blues once more attacking. A good line kick by Oughton gave Star relief.* A scries of line-outs ensued, Blues having the advantage. Blues were making the great mistake of using the line with a strong wind in their favour. Fast following by Muir saw Blues in trouble. A good kteu by Fraser was missed by Liliey, play once more going into Star’s twenty-five. Star forwards now took a turn, forcing play well down the held. From a penalty Liliey had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Blues forced. From the drop-out play settled at half-way, when from a scrum Blues attempted a passing rush which soon broke down. 1' ast following by the Star forwards again forced play into Blues’ territory’. From a penalty Liliey kicked the bail over the goals, but as the bell touched a Blue forward no goal was yggi-jtered. Fast play’ saw Star attacking. From a penalty Liliey had another unsuccessful shot at goal. Blues immediately attacked, and fast following up saw Star in trouble. A fast forward rush saw- the ball carried over Stars’ line and forced. Star iaow forced play to Blues’ line where Ough-
ton was well tackled right in the corner. From a penalty Lilley kicked out to the corner, where the spell ended. From the kick-off Star immediately attacked and forced play into Blues’ 25, where a series of scrums and line-outs ensued. Star bucks tried a passing rush, which was spoiled by a faulty pass. From a penalty Lilley had another unsuccessful shot at goal, the ball going wide. Blues forced. From tho drop-out Blue? by a nice forward rush forced play into Stars’ territory. From a penalty Fraser had an unsuccessful attempt at goal. Blues now attacked strongly, and were unfortunate in not scoring. From a scrum Star obtained possession and kicked well down the line. From a penalty Lilley again had another attempt at goal, Blues forcing. Play now became very exciting, Blue forwards attacking in fine style. A mark on the line gave Star relief, but Blues again attacked, and returned to Stars’ territory. Sutton, Blues’ full-back, was handling the ball well and was surefooted. Star forced play into Blues’ twen-ty-live. From a scrum on the line Blues obtained possession and found touch. Offside play by Star gave Blues relief. Hard kicking by Star saw Blues force. A great rush saw Blues score, but unfortunately the linesman had his Hag up, and play returned to Blues twenty-five. From a mark Lilley once more had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Blues were having the advantage in lincouts, but were kicking rather hank OughUm 'at half was playing a good defensive game for Star. A penalty gave Star relief. From a mark Lilley kicked a nice goal. Star 3, Invercargill 0. Blue attacked and forced play into Stars’ twenty-five, but tho Star forwards returned the attack and play shitted down the field. Blues however returned and from a mark had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Time was sounded with play in midfield. Mr G, Withers was referee.

Sparks, O Brien, Winders, Cuff, Roche, and MaplftoU. Athletic kicked off from the eastern end apainst the wind and play went to the Greens’ 25 flag. Loose forward work ended on Athletic’s hue- and from a scrum the bail went over. Greens forced, dire (.rop-cut saw the Rods keep up the pressure and faulty fielding by the Greens let the Red forwards opt.a and Waikiwi attempted to pars. A scrum followed anil the Reds secured and Knight receiving from Wills, scored neatly. Wilis -maled. Waikiwi. 5; Athletic, nil. Using the wind Reds returned the kick-off to midfield and a neat line-kick by Wills put Red on attack. A Red forward rush was finished by Bourchier scoring iu good position; Wilts lulled. —-Waikiwi, 8; Athletic, nil. Greens cleared from the drnp-out and smiled, play to midfield. The Red forwards gradually returned, but a strong kick went over. Athletic The drop-out did not clear Greens’ territory and by good line-work Pmds attacked, Dawson finding the line in their corner. From the line-out Wills secured and scored. Whyte failed.—Waikiwi, 11; Athletic, nil. Greens livened from the drop-out anil and take play followed in m.dlieia, until W. Pay broke and put Waikiwi on attack. A frcc-kick relieved Greens for a time, the Red forwards relieving to the Green line. From a scrum Red secured, but the ball was thrown out touch in goal. Cross by a good run cleared Greens’ danger zone, and the Green forwards crossed into Reds’ ground. A free-kick relieved Waikiwi, and open work ended with the Reas on attack. Loose forward rushes up ami down field ended on the Greens’ line. Knight losing possession as he crossed. Green forced. Iho Red forwards playing together well gave the Green backs a lot of defensive work to do. From a serum in front of Greens' posts Coaklev denied for a time, but the Red forwards were soon hammering at. Greens’ end again. A free cleared Greens’ territory. Cooke further improving with a good kick. From a scrum in ’Kiwi’s territory the Red forwards came away in a good rush and ciossed Greens’ lino and Walker scored. _ Whyte graded.—Waikiwi, 10; Athletic, ml. dhc kick-off was returned to Reds’ 25 flap, but bad handling by the Green backs allowed Red to clear. An exchange of kicks interspersed with passing ended in the Greens forcing. The dropout was followed by a Red forward rush that the Greens failed to stop. Walker scored wide. Whyte failed. Waikiwi, 19; Green, nil. The drop-out. brought no relief to Greens, and V. e.lcr finished another forward rush by scoring again—Waikiwi, 22 ; Athletic, nil. Halftime was sounded. Waikiwi kicked off and play of a scrambling nature followed in midfield. A freekick put Greens on attack inside Reds’ 25 flag. Faulty handling by the Green backs gave Wills a chance to clear, and play returned to halfway. McKenzie opened _ up and Greens gained" some ground by passing. A. centre went too far ami Red forced. The drop-out was followed by good forward play in Reds’ ground, until the Red forwards, headed by Whyte and Bourchier carried the ball to the Green line. A hard kick went; out touch in goal. The dropout was returned to near the Greens’ line, a force relieving Green. The Greens’ by a loose forward rush carried play to the Waikiwi territory, but the Reds rallied and cleared. Whyte.' Walker and Bourchier carried play to the Greens’ line. Walker fielded and scored.—Waikiwi, 25; Athletic, nil. _ The Red forwards were again prominent in a dangerous rush, but a free stopped them. Play returned to neutral ground. A loose forward rush by the Greens ended in the ball going out at the corner flag. The Greens kept up the pressure and play centred in front of the Red posts. From a scrum in the 25 Reds cleared, but the Greens returned and play centred in Waikiwi’s territory, the Greens making big efforts to score. The Red forwards eventually cleared and carried play to Greens’ ground. Give and take forward play ended in Athletic attacking, but the defence was too strong, Knight going right down field. Green forced. The drop-out was returned
to halfway, but the Red forwards returned to the Green line. A free relieved Green. By a passing rush Red returned, but the defence was too strong and Greens cleared to half. After a lot of loose forward play followed until Cross secured and with a good run put Greens on attack. Time was then sounded. Mr J. Forrester controlled the game.
