WANGANUI SENSATION

A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR. THE CHIEF ACTORS. (Special to the Times.) , CHRISTCHURCH, May 18. Mr Charles Evan Mackay, Mayor of Wanganui, who is in custody on a charge of attempted murder, is well known in He is a comparatively young man, although he has taken an active part in public life in Wanganui for some years. For some time past he has been President of the Wanganui Trotting Club, and he also holds a seat on the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Mr Mackay is a Wellington and Wanganui Colleges’ Old Boy, and the son of a former principal o» Wellington College. He came to Canterbury in 1892, and graduated in 1896. He is well known in Christchurch, and it is stated that his wife was in Christchurch when the episode in Wanganui occurred. Mr Darcy Cressweli is a Christchurch man. His age has been given as 24 but he is probably older. Before going to the war he was folio-wing the profession of an architect, and he is also a clever black and white artist. His father, Mr W. J. Cressweli, who is now farming at Tim am, was until recently a member of a legal firm in Christchurch. He left for the north with Mrs Cressweli on receipt of the news of the affair.
