TRAMWAY SYSTEM
PROPOSED PURCHASE. AN ENGLISH OFFER. The question of the proposed tram ear purchase was again before the Town Council last evening when a letter was read from H.M. Trade Commissioner for New Zealand stating that Messrs William Coward and Co. had promised delivery' of under carriages from England in six months and (he bodies in twelve months. The writer’s department asked that the Council should forward copies of specifications and drawings. It was also desired to ascertain if, should the specifications relate to American style cars, alternative tenders should be admitted. The chairman of the Tramway Committee (Mr J. F. Liliicrapi moved (hat the letter be referred to his committee. He. said that, before taking any action, the committee desired to wait for the return of Councillor A. H. Mackrcli who was making inquiries in Australia regarding the possibility' of purchasing cars there. It had to be remembered that there was no indication as to what the price of the English cars would be. The committee had communicated with Cowards before the Trade Commissioner got into touch with them, and a cable on the lines of the information in the letter had been received. There could be no doubt that it was very important that something definite should be done at an early' dale. The motion having been seconded by Cr F. W. Freddy, Cr J. Miller offered the opinion that there was no reason why they should wait until Councillor Mackrcli returned. They should get quotations from Cowards at once. Cr Lillicrap: We shall have to send them specifications first. The letter was referred to the committee.
