MEAT CONGESTION
CANTERBURY WORKS REDUCING OUTPUT. EARLY RELIEF EXPECTED. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. Owing to the congestion of stock at the various freezing works, two works have actually ceased operations, and most of the others have greatly reduced the number of slaughtermen employed at the boards. However, men in the industry expect that all the works will be open again in June, and will deal at their capacity with the offerings of stock. The congestion has been caused by reason of the fact that most of the refrigerated vessels which were to arrive in May will not be here until The vessels which will load'at Lyttelton next month include the Remuera. Woodarra (which is taking nearly 22,000 freight carcases from Lyttelton), Gaelic, and Waiwera. These will effect a clearance sufficient for the works to get into full swing again.
