The winning sires’ list, to date shows Demosthenes £27,323 1-3, anti Martian £23,726. Both amounts are records. The previous best was credited to Martian lust season. The one third in Demosthenes’list relates to a race at Wellington when one of his progeny took part in a treble dead heat. Mr W. Stone’s Silver Peak had a very successful season, getting ten firsts (including a dead heat) and four seconds for her present owner. The daughter of Adjudge won six events and was three times second. Her total winnings for the current season are £1575, of which £335 wos secured by Mr Ruthven. The 1 arest development in connection with the jockeys’ dispute took place at Lyttelton to-day, when the crew of the ferry steamer Maori notified the Union Company that they would not sail if racehorses were shipped. This action was taken apart from the Seamen's Union. It seems that the men held an informal conference during the week-end, and to-day two of their number waited on the local secretary of the Seamen’s Union and asked him to inform the Union Company that the seamen ami firemen would not. sail with any racehorses on board until the .Jockeys’ Union is recognised. This also applies to all coastal vessels running between the two islands. The ship-owners were informed accordingly. The waterside workers also intimated that they would refuse to load horses in the face of the action taken by the seamen. Six horses in the charge of the trainers Lowe. Ayres, Wilson, am! Lycett, the well-known Australian tennis player, has announced that he does not wish to play for Australia in the Davis Cup matches. He was born in England and will play for the British Isles, if selected. FOOTBALL, FLXTURES FOR THURSDAY. The Southland Rugby Football Union has ilecided to change the football programme drawn up tor Thursday morning. On Saturday the Bluff team notified the Union that they would not be able to come to Invercargill on Thursday. The Bluff captain stated that live of his team were employed in the Ocean Beach freezing works and would be working all Thursday morning, while several of the members of the team would be unable to travel. Inquiries among other Saturday teams showed that they were also finding it ilifficult to raise teams for Thursday. The union therefore decided to play all Saturday matches on the usual day. It was also decided to pos-pona all Wednesday junior grade matches. The only games to be played on Thursday morning will bo the two senior grade Wednesday matches, Star v. Invercargill and Athletic v. Waikiwi which will commence at a quarter past 10.
