-MONTHLY MEETING. Toe monthly meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday was attended by the chairman (Mr W. Norman) and Councillors C. Robertson, R. Baird, C. Kerse, T. Fraser, G. Hunter, W. Clarke, A. Stewart, ami J. White. A letter from the Tuapeka County Council protested against the preesnt system of imposing a levy on local bodies for the purpose of proriding revenue for hospital and charitable aid purposes, which the letter claimed was inequitable and unduly taxed the holders of rural properties. The Tuapeka Council requested the Southland County to support, it in its protest.—Received. Cri'-s Brothers, Otama, wrote requesting the Council to grade the road leading from j their gate past Mr White’s property as far | as Mr John McKay’s. The road at present was in a very bad state.—Surfaceman to attend to the matter. The bounty engineer reported on an application made by J. M. Carson, North Maker.'wa, requesting the Council to protect hi-- i",ier-,-:s by preventing Mr Crowe from ii>v< vting water on his property through that of (he applicant's. The engineer recommended that Mr Crowe be informed that he must cease diverting this water. -The ;aeonuuendation was adopted. James An iir-.in, Wendon. It will be necessary to obtain the Public Works Department's sanction to spending this before anything cam bo done. A communication from Mrs E. Hawkcs, . Perkins’ gate to the writer's property.—A Government grant is being applied for. James Martin, Greeniulls, wrote drawing attention to the state of the old flood-gate on the main Invercargill-Bluff road, about 120 chains from the Greenhills station. The sea water came through the culvert in the main road and backed fresh water on to his property.—Engineer to report. A petition signed by nine members of the Oroti riding requested the Council to take the necessary steps towards the erection of a traffic bridge across the Oreti river at the township of Mossburn, thus finking up the vast area of agricultural land, originally known as the Five Rivers Estate, with the railway.—Referred to member for the riding and engineer with power to act. J. G. Ollivcr and other?) petitioned the Council to erect a bridge over the Tomogalak river. The money for the work had been voted and the petitioners requested that the work be started without delay.—• Matter will be attended to as soon as the timber is available. Accounts amounting to £11,615 were passed for payment.
