LOG ON THE LINE

ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 14. The express which left Auckland last even* mg collided with a log placed on the lin» near Pukekohe. The train was brought up undamaged. The log was taken to Pukekohe and handed to the police. OUTRAGE THEORY QUESTIONED. POST NOT ACROSS THE RAILS. AUCKLAND, May 14. The passage of the main trunk train that left Auckland for Wellington last evening was interrupted in the Pareata Pukekohe section through the engine coming in contact with a post that was lying close to but not, according to official advice, across the line. On the cow-ealcher striking tho obstacle the engine-driver alighted, and, placing it on board the train, the journey was continued to Pukekohe, where another halt was called to permit of the post being handed over to the stationmaster. Later it was deposited with the police in that district, and investigations concerning the incident are now proceeding. The officer at the .Auckland head office of the department is inclined to the belief that the post must have fallen from a passing train. Until to-morrow morning, however. when the engine-driver who was in charge of the express returns from Taumarunui, definite information will not ba available.
