BRITAIN AND JAPAN
RENEWAL OF THE ALLIANCE. A NEW YORK REPORT. (By Telegraph.— Press Assn. —Copyright.! (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, May 13. (Received May 14, 8.20 p.m.) A New York Times despatch from London states that the Anglo-Ja.pa.ne.-e Treaty will probably be renewed shortly without material change, except to make it conform to the Treaty of Versailles. It is pointed out that Japan could never ask Britain to side with her against the United States. The Pull Mall Gazette, discussing Mr Watt’s “White- Australia” speech, says that Australia might bring up the point of Kiuuchau arid the extraordinary Japanese immigration to the New Hebrides and Australian island waters, and the necessity of Japanese recognition of Australia as a white country.
