VAGRANT VERSE
CHEER OH ! FOR LONDON TOWN. (Written for the Southland Times). The sun leaps up from bleak North Se* And Earth is gay as Earth can be; We're off, with hearts that dance with gie«. Cheer Oh! for London Town. To London Town, to London Town, We'll take the road to London Town, To London Town, to London Town. Cheer Oh! for London Town. The dew is sparkling this May morn On nodding flowers and milk-white thorn; Our hearts are flushed with hopes new-born. Cheer Ob! for London Town. In wondrous stories we are told That London streets are paved with gold. Wo fain the marvel would behold. Cheer Oh! for London Town. Our mothers’ eyes with salt tears flow. Our fathers say London has woe, We’ll take our chance, so off we go. Cheer Oh! for London Town. Grown dotard with the years have they Who take the gloomy view alway, But we, my lads, are sons of day. Cheer Oh! for London Town. With wealth and honour in our train We’ll show them all their fears were vain. When dashing we come back again Cheer Oh! from London Town. —Robert Francis. Bluff, May 13.
