SOCIALISTS IN U.S.A.

AN OPTIMISTIC LEADER. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z, Cable Association.) NEW YORK, May 8. (Received May 9, 12.30 a.m.) The Premier of Queensland, Mr Theodore, attended a convention of the Socialist Party of America. Mr Hillquit, the Socialist leader, introduced him as “a Prime Minister of Labour.” The Internationale Marseillaise, the “Hymn of Free Russia,” was sung and the unveiling of a portrait of Eugene Debs imprisoned on a charge of espionage during war time, was a feature of the proceedings. Mr Hillquit predicted that the Socialists would poll 2,000,000 votes in the Presidential campaign, sufficient to turn the election. He attacked the Government for reviving Spanish inquisition methods in the United States in order to kill the Socialist movement.
