THE VOLCANO OF MAUN A LOA. |

This lofty volcano (says the Hawaiian A 3 Gazette of the 3rd September), is burning as brilliantly now as on the night when it burst forth (7th January). On tJ "Wednesday night, 27th August, it lit up * the entire island, and its glare could be seen by vessels passing more than a hun- Whei dred miles distant. Early in August Dp O. B. Adams, surgeon of the Costa Bica, accompanied by his wife, visited the crater, and found it in magnificent action. The weather was intensely cold, water in their containers freezing solid during the NEA night. It was impossible to induce the native guides to remain at the summit Coao longer than one night, and the doctor Lk was in consequence compelled to make a shorter stay there than he had planned. V Mrs Adams is the third lady who has _ made the ascent during the past year, and we doubt not feels amply repaid for S O the excursion. The column of molten lava, which is thrown out of the summit crater, varies from 200 ft. to 500 ft in height, and assumes all the various forms -_- of a grand fountain of water. It is sin- J . gular that the eruption Bhould continue with so little change for over seren months, as it has, at such a great elevation, nearly 14,000 ft. above the sea.
