The ship Christian M'Austland, for Dunedin, was si^nal^d from the flagstaff on Wednesday evening. We will no doubt hear of her arrival tlisr. 1 to day. The ship Bebington left. Port Chalmers Heads on the 15th inst., and arrived at the Bluff on the afternoon of the 16th, making the run down in sixteen hours, with a light E. and S.E. wind, •which speaks well for het sailing qualities. She brings 200 tons original cargo from London, and 550 tons railway material tmnshipped ex Rokeby Hail at Port Chalmers. Sho takes her berth alongside the new wharf to day, and begins dis- I charging as soon as the rails are laid down, and^ as wool is already coming into town, there is likely to be no delay in loading her. The New Zealand Herald says :— " We are glad to sre that the Auckland Steam Packet Company intend making a vigorous effort to enlarge their operations, and to lay the foundation for what we hope will be a powerful and prosperous fleet of ocean-going steamers as the commerce of Auckland increases. The Steam Packet Company are not without experience, and have moved so cautiously in the past that their present attempt to enlarge operations will be regarded with the greater confidence and favor. Ir will be seen from the prospectus in another column that, after allowing a large sum for depreciation, the net profits for eighteen months have been over 50 per cent. The directors have wisely retained a large portion of these earnings for the development of the company, paying only a dividend at the rate of 10~ per cent, for the half-year just ended."
