Mr Montgomery, of Christchurch, late chairman of the Board of Education, has been elected member of the Provincial Council in room of Mr Duncan, who has been appointed Emigration Agent for the Province in the home country. In the course of his speech, Mr Montgomery said he was in favor of a property tax for educational purposes, but he thought household rating was best under the cir« cumstafcces. Dtjnedin-, Sept. 22. An eight horse team and waggon were capsized in the Manuherikia river, when one of the horses was drowned, and all the goods were washed away.
