MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 27th uJt. reports : —
In the import market, business has not shown much improvement ; a moderate demand, however, has been experienced, though there is no desire to operate largely. In breadstuff's, we note the quittance by auction of 44 tons Howlong flour at £14 10s ; this, however, is an exceptional brand, and the market generally is not affected thereby, although the price quoted is 5s more than was obtained last week for the same brand. There has been a good inquiry privately, which has led to the quittance of a line of 100 tons at £14 net, or equal to £14 2s 6d, ordinary terms. Bakers' lot* still move off at £14 15s to £15. For wheat, 6s 9d is still required, but this being higher than is warranted by the price of flour, only those who are forced can be got to purchase at the price. A fair business is done in oats. Under the hammer, 3000 bushels were quitted at 6s 3d ; 1000 bushels were sold privately at a similar figure, and 1000 bushels were disposed of in bond for export at 4s lOd (equal to 5s 3d). Maize is heavy, and though 4s 7d is asked, 4s 6Jd would not be refused. Candles continue to meet with a good deal of favor. One thousand boxes Ooudas were got rid of publicly at ll£d, and 1500 D.B-CL's have changed hands by private contract at Hid. Sugars are enquired for, more especially good yellows. By auction, the cargo of Bourbon sugars, per St. Francois, comprising 4190 bags and mats, was cleared off this forenoon. Low yellows brought £31 to £31 15s ; fine rations, £28 5s to £28 155 ; medium rations, £25 , 15s to £27 j and low rations, £22 10s to £24 105. Mauritius grey crystals fetched £36 10s to £36 158 ; fine yellow, £38 10s ; 2500 mats Java grey crystals were placed at £36 ss, and 187 bags Victorian beetroot sugar were quitted at £25 to £31 6s. The Charity, whose arrival is announced today from Java, brings a cargo, chiefly consisting of sugar, to the consignment of F. W. Prell and Co. Sales of Eleme raisins are reported at 7d. Devoe's -kerosene oil was disposed of at Is 9d, and 400 cases Oriental were quitted at Is Bfd. 122 bales Calcutta weolpacks, of irregular weights, and sold under the hammer in coneequence, were cleared off at 39 6d to 3s Bd. Tobaccoes are steady. In liquids, we note further Bales of O'Brien's dagger stout at 12s 3d for common, and 12s 6d for champagne bottles.
