APARIMA ROAD BOARD.
The annual meeting of the above Board was held in the sehoolhouse, Flint's; Bush, on the, 20th inst. The chairman (Jaa. Mackintosh, Esq ) and all the members, with the exception of Messrs Hopcroft and Johnston, were present. Returns from the differeut Returning Officers were read, showiug that the following gentlemen had been elected mem- , bers of the Board : — Mr Lachlan ? Fraser (Waianiwa subdivision), Mr "W. A. Lyon (Waimatuku subdivision), Mr John Cumming (Jacob's Kiver subdivision), Mr Richard James (Mount Pleasant subdivision), and Messrs James Mackintosh and M'Lachlan (Heddon Bush subdivision). Mr Mackintosh having been elected for two subdivisions, decided to represent Heddon Bush. Mr W. Johnston, of Wrey's Bush, was uanimously appointed by the Board to represent Mount Pleasant subdivision, and being present, took hie seat as a member of the Board. The Board's books, statement of accounts, and abstract thereof, together with the auditor's report thereanent, having been laid on the table, were ap proved by the Board and certified accordingly. :" Mr Johnston was appointed chairman of committee for the Mount Pleasant subdivision, and Messrs Johnston and James were authorised to sign contracts for that subdivision. Mr Fraser was appointed, in conjunction with MrSutton, to sign contracts for the New River subdivision ; and Messrs Mackintosh and M'Lachlan for the Hoddon Bush subdivision. The chairman having reported that he had signed cheques in payment of works completed since last meeting, the Board expressed its approval of what had been done. It was resolved that in future payments should be made when the vouchers have been filled up and duly signed by the engineer or inspector, committee, and chairman. The clerk's salary was ordered to be paid, with an allowance of £10 for extra work and travelling expenses. Several accounts were passed for payment. It was resolved that the engineer be asked to survey the road leading from the main road to Collie's Ford, in order to ascertain to what extent the fence recently erected there encroaches on the road line, and report to the clerk ; that the clerk give notice accordingly, and should it interfere with the road line, and the owner or occupier decline to remove the fence, the clerk be instructed to institute legal proceedings. It was proposed by Mr Gerard, and seconded by Mr James, that the meetings of the Board should be held at the schoolhouse, Limestone Plains. An amendment was proposed by Mr Boyd, and seconded by Mr M'Neill, that tbe meetings be held alternately at LimeBtone Plains and Flint's Bush. The motion was carried. Mr. Gerard proposed, . and Mr Lyon seconded, that the Board give £20 towards building a shed for a stable at Limestone Plains schoolhouse, and that Messrs M'Neill, Lyon, and M'lntyre be appointed a committee to carry out this resolution, said committee being instructed to make arrangements for the accommodation of members. An amendment was proposed by Mr Sutton, and seconded by Mr Fraser, that the meetings of the Board should be held in Riverton. The motion was carried. With regard to the division of the district, the following motion was adopted : — lt having been ascertained that the Roads Ordinance does not provide for the formation of part of a district into a new district, the Board resolves to take no steps in the matter at present. Although the division of the district cannot be carried into effect at present, some of the members approved of having it done as soon as possible ; Mr Cumming therefore moved, and Mr Fraser seconded, that it is desirable to have the district divided, and that the necessary steps be taken to have this carried out. This motion was carried on the casting vote of the chairman, six voting for and six against it. Mr Mackintosh having intimated that he could not act as chairman during the ensuing year, Messrs M'lntyre, Gumming, Lyon, and Boyd, were proposed. Tbe two first-named having declined to | act, Mr Lyon was ultimately elected. A vote of thanks to the retiring chairman { was ordered to be recorded. On the motion of Mr M'lntyre, seconded by Mr G-erard, the sum of 30s was allowed for accommodation of members for each ordinary meeting held during the past year. The clerk was appointed valuer, and instructed to revise the valuation roll. Mr Patrick Ford's tender for contract No. 24 was accepted, Mr M'Neil proposed, and Mr Johnston seconded, that the general rate for 1873-4 be 6d in the £. Mr Lyon proposed, as an amendment, seconded by Mr Boyd, that the rate be Is in the £. The motion was carried. Mr M'lntyre gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the Waimatuku subdivision be authorised to borrow £500 on the security of the general rates. The Board resolved to request the Government to declare the Wallacetown to Riverton road, and the road from Riverton to Otautau, main Government roads. The clerk was instructed to direct the engineer to make proper tracings of the road deviations, in order that the necessary steps might be taken to get the land conveyed. Mr Boyd having resigned the office of treasurer, it was resolved that the Bank account be transferred to Riverton, and that the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand there be requested to act as treasurer. tion LS, block 9, Jacob's Eiver hundred, was passed for payment.
The clerk was instructed to ask whether the Government will subsidise money borrowed for carrying out the purposes of the Roads Ordinance, 1871.
The next meeting of the Board was fixed to be held on the 27th September.
