Auckland, August 20. Bishop Moran has evoked much criticism by denouncing secret societies at the Thames. He said that there were only two churches in the world, the Catholic Church and Satan's church, and the latter was formed by secret societies. The Albion, from Newcastle, reports the wreck of the Mary, of Sydney, near Newcastle, when all bands were lost. Napibe, August 21. The General Government has resolved to place a 10-horse power steamer on Lake Taupo. The engines are being constructed here, and the boat is to be built at Taupo. Wellington, August 20. The inquiry before the Governor regarding the mutiny on board the William Tapscott was continued to-day, when several witnes3es were examined, and the enquiry was adjourned. August 21. The coal barque, Anne Melhuish, having missed stays, went aground at the Heads. The steamer Wellington, from Auckland, went to her assistance, towed her off, and brought her into the harbor, when it was found that part of her keel was broken, and that she had 2i, feet of water in the hold. There is no serious damage done. The Gazette shows the value of imports into the Colony, during the quarter ended 30th June, as £1,690,685, as against £1,028,630 for the corresponding quarter of 1872. The value, of tbe exports for the same quarter was £1,043,072, as against £1,237,740 during the corresponding quarter of 1872. The vessels entered inwards during the June quarter of 1873 were 101 ; their tonnage, 62,079, and their crews, 2611, as against 185 vessels, of 66,951 -tons, and crews numbering 3140, for the corresponding quarter of 1872. The vessels entered outwards during the same quarter were 182, their tonnage 72,326, and their crews 2973, as against 194 vessels, of 74,569 tons, and crewa numbering 3415 during the corresponding quarter last year. The following is tbe state of the polling for the return of a member to represent the Lakes district in the. Genera' As- I sembly :-— Pyke, 220; Manders, 179; Innes, 173; Barton, 98 Ihe only return to come in is the one from the Shotover branches , but it cannot affect the result. August 21. An accident occurred on the Port Chalmers railway yesterday through the points jamming with a stone. The engine was thrown off the line, when the carriage, bogie plate, and pin of the engine were smashed. Fortunately no person was injured. Fox, the pedestrian, leaves for Christchurch to-morrow to run Harris for the championship of ISew Zealand. The following are the complete returns in the Wakatip election : — Pyke, 226 ; Manders, 192 ; Innes, 174 ; Barton, 101. Mr Manders lost the election * through an accident preventing his visiting Cardrona, Macetown, and other places.
