M«tlicnl» dec APOTHECARIES' HALL, DEE STREET, INVEROARGILL. To the Inhabitants of the Southland Distriot of the Province of Otago. \X'l£ lIAVK ON THIS OCCASION deter* * V miiuul v? ili-.iw ttttontion through the IVoiic F't-:^, rat'.itir i!\>ui by circular (in coiifideratiou of the- scattered iiuture of tho jioi'uiii'iim), to the ontiiv i-hiuijie in the coitdiu't of our ISupinot^, which was intimated so fur back as May, 1871, but the uiiafovtimc of the lamentable Tay-Btreet Fire of October the 11th, of the Baiuo year, frustrated for twelve months the completion of plans then about to be initiated. THE CONSTANT COMPLAINT of the community has been that Invercargill business men hold only a second or third rank, through the fact, in many instances, of prices of various kinds of leading merchandise ruling higher here than in other towns in New Zealand. The real cause is apparent to those 111 watching the business career of the ULJ place, and can really be put down in a I great measure to the fact that there is a ■"■" large amount of jealousy amongst those <£ who have it in their power to metamoryp? phose, aB it were, the business of the \J J district — by combination. Where one or two willing but small business men are inclined to go in for direct Home Z Importations, they are at a disadvantage, for the larger importers are not Oat one in this desirable course of action ; the consequence is, we have all along been dependent upon those who are reaping the reward of our shortcomings, Q whereas a market should have been made for ourselveß (instead of bolsterZing up that of others), naturally making more important the trade to the Portß of Bluff, Invercargill, and Riverton — each vessel, locally owned, always leaving the mark of pros, perity behind her. With thes preliminary remarks, we are in a position to state that with the arrival of Goods per "H V D A S P E S," FROM LONDON, JUNE 21st, 1872, THEBE DIFFICULTIES have been overcome. We shall then be in a position to do business which we could never touoh before with profit, and in many cases either or both wholesale and retail prices will be considerably reduced, as it has been our steady aim to consummate this advantage to all, it being our intention to give, where able, the. whole of Qthe benefit derived from our satisfactory conclusion of business relations ||| with London direct j we expect from the numerous braiioheß of the commuI | nity, the support that we shall (^_^ prove ourselves to merit, depreeating also the idea that the jealousy ™T of location in this or that street should be sufficient justification for the withI drawal of support from one who has "~ buffeted the adverse current of events concomitant with the history of any new locality. Here we would wish to remind our constituents that until further notice is given, the whole of our business will be carried on in premises previously known as JAMES EEED & CO.'S, and immediately opposite TULLOCH'S EXCHANGE BUILDINGS, and placing all articles at our disposal beyond a doubt aB to their genuineness, which iB always regarded aB a boon in our particular line. THE IMMEJNSE LENGTH to which the credit system has extended here, has also been a great drawback to business men, recoiling on those who have participated ff\ in it ub the primary cause of, and excuse for, higher priceß than would remuf~^\ nerate the importers, if sure of a speedy O^""^ return — even when the goods were disposed of. The reductions in our prices, O which will now vary from ten to twenty* five per cent., which partly represents the intermediate Wholesale Importers' C/j Profit, will correct this to a great extent, and if fortunate in receipt of Goods per "Hydaspeß," either at the ■» close of this or the commencement of tf\ the coming month, our new principles • I in Business will be inaugurated with LLI the new quarter on the first of October r\ next, immediately at the close of our LLa financial year and stocktaking, prior tf\ to which date, to enable us bo \^ to do, all accounts as, now rendered should be settled within the month, as Q previous partnership, and the taking orer of Mr G. M. K. Clarko'B, and J. Reed & Co.'c business, aB also the October fire, have caußed some little ™ T"» derangements. Entire New Books will JL be now opened, and the others, both io Invercargill and Riverton, finally closed* THE ATTENTION of the residents of town and the suburbs — Pastoral Tenants, Farmers, Diggers, Storekeepers, Brewers, Photographers, Cordial Manufacturers, Hotelkeepers, Surgeons, Hospitals, Druggists, and others, is directed to oar list of PATENT MEDICINE S—Drugs, Chemicals, Perfumery, Brushware, Dyewoods, Drysaltery, Medicinal Glassware, Mechanical and Surgical Appliances and Instruments, Toilet Soaps, Confec' tionery and Sick Boom Requisites, Sfc, <$■<?., of which we are now DIEECT IMPOETEES, And enumerated more particularly in the columns of the Southland Nuwb, comprising as it does a shipment of ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY CASES AND CASES of well-aßsorted Goods, and of the DECLAEED IMPOET VALUE Of £1000 STEELING.
