COUNTRY INTELLIGENCE.
(ntOX OtTE COBBESPOKDJNT.) BWITZEBS. The weather here for the last few days has been beautiful for this time of the year, although the nights have been sharp and frosty, the days being bright and clear. There was a bit of a rush up to the head of Gow's Creek about a fortnight since, but no returns have Tet been received. Some of the claims up the Waikaia have turned out very rich, but nearly all the available ground is taken up. The claim on the Scrubby Terraces turned out seventy ounces for the last washing, which proves beyond a doubt the existence of payable gold in that quarter. Altogether the district bids fair to send down more gold than ever, but being so scattered the township is extremely dull at this time of the year, very few people- making their appearance on the Hill, the roads being so bad. To enliven things a little, we are to have an amateur dramatic performance in the early part of next month, the proceeds to go to the funds of the Hospital. In the Resident Magistrates' Court, held this day, before J. N. Wood, Esq., Mr Dapp, storekeeper, Gow's Creek, was fined £30 and costs for selling spirits without a license. August 14, 1873.
