The company offering to lay the cable between New Zealand and Sydney have increased the capital required to £470,000. A guarantee of five per cent, for 25 years is required. The Company suggest that New Zealand should immediately guarantee the line, the capital offered for the line between Queensland and India being inadequate. The following is a return of the lands sold in the different provinces during the year 1872 : — Auckland, 625 acres ; Hawke's Bay, 10,390 acres ; Wellington, 05,156 acreß ; Nelson, 1020 acres ; Marlborough, 604 acres j Canterbury, 105,373 acres ; Westland, 4950 acres ; Otago, 135,481 acres ; Southland, 9611 acres. This is increased to 536,574 acres in 1873 by payment s for public works reserved, grants to Natives, and payment of New Zealand Company's scrip. The A gent- General has telegraphed that the war medals will be sent out by the July mail.
Dtwedin, August 11. Mr Jno. Douglas bugs Mr Gt. W. Elliot for an alleged libel which arose through a discussion at the Waste Lands Board. Heavy damages are claimed.
