The National Tteformer confirms the j statement that Mr Bradlaugb was recently captured by the Carlists, but says that after a detention of some hours he managed to effect hia escape. Mr Bradlaugh promises a detailed account of his adventures on his return to England. The Paris correspondent of the Cologne Gazette says it is well known that the whole of the intrigue against M. Thiers which has resulted in his resignation was directed from Rome. It is very generally reported in Exeter that the Marquis of Lome is in treaty with the Earl of Devon for Powderhatn Castle as a residence. A Parisian restaurateur has just found in the maw of a salmon a diamond ring of great value. This reminds one of the fortunate rope-maker in the " Arabian Nights." ' The Modoc war is ended. Captain Jack and his companions were captured without resistance, and the entire band have now unconditionally surrendered. The cost of the proposed tower at Whippinghara in memory of the recovery of the Prince of Wales from his dangerous illness, is estimated at £4000. Upwards of £300 has been subscribed. The Civilian is informed that every member of the Metropolitan Board of Works has been called upon by an eminent firm of solicitors, acting on behalf of a large ratepayer, to pay his quota — £150— of the £4000 spent by the Board on the occasion of the late thanksgiving at St. Paul's. Sir Samuel and Lady Baker's safety is further assured by a Foreign Office telegram, dated May 17, from Alexandria, and affording confirmation of the private telegrams recently sent to Earl Granville. It is added that, in compliance with Sir Samuel's demand, 200 soldiers, with a supply of salt and ammunition, had been sent to him. An instance of the extraordinary fecundity of the Dorset breed of sheep has just been afforded in Cambridgeshire. Last year Mr Moyes, landlord of the Bull Hotel at Cambridge, selected for breeding 19 Dorset ewes, which he had imported direct from their native county. In the months of September and October last .these ewes gave birth to no less than 32 lambs. In due time they were again put up, and this spring have produced 43 lambs more, or in all 75 lambs since September last. The people of Dundee have been rather shocked by the result of an analysis recently made by order of the superintendent of police of samples of their daily food. They bad no idea of the nastiness they had been swallowing. Out of eighteen samples of tea, some of them purchased from the largest tea warehouses in Dundee, there was not one sample among them which was not more or less adulterated with Prussian blue, blacklead, starch, turmeric, carbonate of lime, china clay, and terra alba, or one or more of these articles. Out of five samples of coffee there was not a pure sample, but all were mixed with chicory. Of tour samples of cocoa there was no sample unmixed with starch and sugar. Of four samples of flour none were pure, all being more or less mixed with alum. Of four samples of bread none were un- | mixed with alum. Of four samples of butter none were unadulterated, all being more or less mixed with fat. They are, however, in Dundee better off than most people as regards their beer and wine. Ail' the samples of claret, port, sherry, porter, bitter ale, sweet rum, and brandy, were found freo from adulteration, and on the whole the result of the analysis seems to show that in Dundee, at least, the drunkards havethe advantage over the gluttons, and that the grocers are bigger sinners than the publicans. ,
