THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

THE EBTIMATEB. The first item moved was — " Supenn- * tendent, £1000." 5 Mr Stout said that no doubt many members experienced a delicacy in dealing with this item, but he thought that no feeling should stand in the way of i preventing any member of the Council from doing his duty. He would move that the item should stand at £800. * After some discussion, the amendment was lost on a division by 23 votes against s 14. The following is the division list: — 3 Axes, 14 — Messrs Allan, Clark, H. (teller), Gillies, Green, Ireland, Kinross, " Lumsden, Menzies, M'Kellar, M'K>nzie, Reid, Stout (teller), Wilson, Wood. 8 Noes, 23 — Messrs Bastings, Browne 3 G. P. On the item, " Secretary for Goldfields and Works, £600," ' Mr M'Kenzie moved, as an amendment, that the amount should be reduced to £400. ' A discussion ensued, many hon members on both sides of the House .urging that it was very injudicious to make a distinction between the salaries paid to 1 the various heads of departments, and to vote £400 as a salary for two members of the Executive who were to divide it amongst themselves. On a division, the amendment was lost by 21 against 14. The following is the division list : — Ates, 14 — Messrs Allan, Gillies, Green, Haggitt, Kinross, Lumsden, Mollison (teller), M'Dermid, M'Kenzie (teller), Reid, Stout, Sumpter, Wilson, and Wood.
