It will be seen that one of the candidates for a seat in the Municipal Council, at the nomination on Tuesday, referred to the question of water supply as a matter that should have the attention of the Council. We thank the candidate for the suggestion, and. trust ttat the water question will receive very early consideration from the Municipil body. Whether viewed as a sanitary measure — a matter of domestic economy — encouragement to manufacturing— or as a provision against fire, the furbishing a continuous supply of pure wate? to every household and business establishment should not be long delayed. The recent resolution of the Council to takeinfco their own hands the supply of gas to the residents, makes the present a most opportune occasion for considering the subject with a view to early action. There is reason to believe that the two works might be constructed simultaneously at a great saving of coat as compared with the cost of erecting the two sets of woiks at different periods. The provision foi both works being carried on in concert nwy be easily made, bo as to insure a large siving in working expenses. The distribution of both supplies would scarcely exceed the cost of the single supply. Borrowing powers are required by the Council to complete the gasworks, and the sum might be very properly increased to meet both requirements. Probably in the winter, when the water question is daily set at rest by the copious supply from above, the need of action may not seem so urgent. We however commend the matter to the consideration of the Council as one which ought to be . care- . fully and seriously discussed without loss of time.
