WINTON PLOUGHING MATCH.

«. The plouehing match which came off on Friday, llthinst., at Winton, was in point of attendance "apparently not as much of an attraction as the fine weather would have seemed to warr.-.nt. A special train was laid on from Invercargill, but very few of the townspeople availed themselves of it. A fair muster of district residents appeared on the ground assigned for the contest, being the land of Mr J. H. Baker, very conveniently (situated at the Forest Hill crossing of the railway line. The competition was confined to five single furrow ploughs (inclusive of one held by J. Kidd, a junior) and two double furrow ploughs. The ground selected was too rough to admit of much style in the finish ; the work was, however, upon the whole good. Messrs James Mackintosh, James Galbraith, and G. Sampson acted as Judges, and the prizes were awarded as follows : — Single ploughs — Ist, H. Livingstone, Forest Hill ; 2nd, W. Lunham, ploughman to Mr R. Taylor, Winton ; 3rd, James Hamilton, son of Mr T. Hamilton, Forest Hil. Best break and finish, H. Livingstone. Double furrows — Ist, G. Crosbie ; 2nd, J. Thomson, of Messrs Thomson and Sons. For the best groomed horses and kept harness the prize was awarded to Mr Cowie, and that for the best pair of horses on the ground to Messrs Thomson and Sons. After the award, about forty gentlemen adjourned to White's Railway Hotel, and sat down to a first rate spread under the presidency of Mr Ralph Swale, Mr D. Cameron acting as vice. Loyalty and patriotism, with the acknowledgments of the services of the gentlemen acting as Judges, and other matters agricultural, with intervale of songs, brought about late hours before the company dispersed after spending a pleasant evening.
