THE WAIHOPAI ELECTION.

nomination of candidates. The nomination of candidates for the representation of the Waihopai district in the Provincial Council took place at the rear ofthe Courthouse yesterday at noon. Mr Macrorie, the Returning Officer, having opened the proceedings in the usual manner, Mr George Goodwillie proposed, and Mr Thomas Brown seconded, Mr William Wood as a fit and proper person to represent the district. Mr H. E. Osborne proposed, and Mr G. Saunders seconded, Mr Thomas Perkins. Mr Wood then addressed the electors at some length, and stated that if returned he would strenuously endeavor to help others to bury the past, and to work harmoniously for the good of the country. A few questions of no special interest having been put to and answered by the candidate, Mr Perkins also addressed the electors, defending himself from the criticisms on his address in the Theatre, made by Mr Wood. This candidate having also replied to several questions, involving no matter of importance, the Returning OflScer called for a show of hands, which was as follows : — Wood 25 Perkin3 ... 24 A poll was then demanded on behalf of Mr Perkins by Messrs Osborne and Saunders, and it was announced that it would take place on Friday, the 20th inst. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer closed the proceedings.
