< I Wellington, May 2. The patent slip was opened to-day with due ceremony. Christchukch, May 2. The pastoral rents paid yesterday and to day amount to £60,000. The total Provincial receipts for the March quarter were £326,865. The expenditure for the same period was £78,198. The Ashburton races came off yesterday. The following are the names of the winners : — Handicap Hurdle Race, Madras; Maiden Plate, Hurricane; Ashburton Plate, Tambourini ; Ladies 1 Purse, Starlight. Auckland, May 5. Prospectors are still proceeding to Ohinemuri. It is thought there is no probability of the Maori King giving up the murderers. He has been interviewed, and returned an unsatisfactory reply. Alexaj^dba., May 5. Mr Mackay has gone to demand the murderers from the King. The latter sent a messenger to tell the Natives that there must be no fighting. The meeting to be held to-morrow will decide the relations to the murderers. A messenger has come ia offering to deliver up Sullivan's heart. Mr M'Lean is expected shortly. Gbahamstown, May 5. Great indignation has been expressed at the inaction of the Government regarding the murder of Sullivan. An organisation is forming to effect reforms in the JS T ative administration. "WELLnr&Tosr, May 5. The journeymen tailors have struck for higher wages. A steam-tug company has been formed, with a capital of £5000, of which £3000 has been subscribed. Ltttelton, May 5. Arrived. — John Bull, from London, after a passage of 140 days. Dttnedin, May 5. Sixteen students have offered themselves for matriculation at the TJniTersity. The Daily Times suggests that instead of having two Universities in the Colony wilh crippled means, the Otago one should be liberally endowed, and the Legislature should give scholarships to deserving youths in the Northern Provinces to enable them to attend here without expense. The first number of the New Zealand Tablet, a Catholic weekly paper, edited by Bishop Moran, was published last Saturday. The Canterbury Press gives currency to a rumor that Mr Macandrew is to be appointed Agent-General. The brewers and others are moving in the direction of starting a bottle manufactory.
