Auckland, April 10. The Government has abandoned its intention of employing the police to canvas for nominated immigrants. The Kenilworth has arrived from the Friendly Islands with the crew of the ship Alsager, which was scuttled near Tongataboo. Three of the crew were kept in irons, charged with scuttling the ship. Wellington, April 10. A notice in the Gazette to-day invites tenders for a loan of £250,000, under the Public Works and Immigration Loan Act, at four per cent. ; tenders to be received till the 10th May. Mr Gisborne has declined to undertake the leadership of the Upper House. The rumor that Mr Yogel intended to dissolve Parliament is untrue. He will meet the Assembly. From official sources, it is understood that the Agent-General had telegraphed to the Government that he had called for tenders for two vessels for the conveyance of immigrants. Messrs Shaw, Saviile and Co.'s tender of £17 per head was the only one received. The same firm offered to contract for a period at £16 16s, but the Agent- Geueral had declined their offer, and referred the question to the Government. The Government will telegraph to Dr Featherston to discontinue all arrangements with Messrs Shaw, Saviile and Co. Oamaru, April 10. Handicap Hurdle Race. — Maid of the Mill, 1 ; Medora, 2. Flying Handicap. — Malvina, 1; Hatred, 2. Dttnedin, April 10. In the Supreme Court, the Judge summed up against the prisoner Ryan, charged with shooting Detective Farrell. The jury retired to consider their verdict at a quarter past five o'clock last night, and were discharged at a quarter to ten this morning, not being able to agree. There were eight for and foui against a conviction. A new trial is to take place on the 21st April. In the case of John Gleeson, charged with manslaughter, at TNaseby, the jury returned a verdict of " not guilty." Arthur Edward Hasting, charged with obtaining money under false pretences at Lawrence, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor. A verdict of " not guilty " was returned in the case of Michael O' Connell, charged with stealing a watch at Palmerston. On Wednesday, the breach of promise case, in which a lady is the defendant, will be heard. Damages are laid at £500 Mr H. S. Fish, jun., has been appointed Provincial Treasurer, vice Mr Turnbuil, resigned. Commercial. — Flour, £11 10s ; wheat is in moderate request at 4s 6d ; barley is very scarce, prime malting realising 7s ; oats, 28 7d ; oatmeal, £16 10s ; pearl barley, £30.
