RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS. The following are the Southland Railway Eeturns for the month ending March 31st : — Corresponding Passengers. No. Cash received. Month in 1872. No. Cash recet'd
DUNEDIN. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report for the week ending sth April as follows : — Fat Cattle. — The supply was but moderate, 33 bead being yarded, which we sold at from £5 5s to £7 10s for bullocks, and £4 10s to £6 for cows, prices equal to 20s per lOOlbs. We also sold privately to the Meat Preserving Company 200 head at 17s per lOOlbs. Fat Sheep. — 640 were penned, which we sold as follows:— 9s half-breds, at 12s 8d ; 445 merino wethers, at from 7s to 8s 6d ; 100 merino ewes, 6s i>d to 6s 9d. We also sold privately 700 wethers, delivered on station, at 8s ; and 1000, delivered in town, at 2^d per lb. We quote prime half-breds, 2^d per lb ; do merinos, 2id. Store Cattle. — We have buyers for full grown cattle, but no transactions to report. Store Sheep. — We have still constant enquiries for all classes. We quote cross-breds, 2 and 4 tootb, lis to 12s ; do, lambs, 8s 6d ; merino wethers, 6s 6d to 7s ; do, ewes, 4 and 6 tooth, 6s 6d to 7s 6d ; do, full-mouthed, 4s 6d to ss. We have sold 4000 cull ewes 300 cross-bred ewes, and 800 6 tooth and full-mouthed, at above quotations. Country Sales.— - We held onr monthly sale at Palmerston on Thursday. The attendance of buyers was fair, and we sold nearly everything yarded, as follows : — 2OO merino ewes, full and broken mouthed, at 3s 6d j 300 crossbred ewes, at Us 3d; 700 merino wethers, 6 tooth and full mouthed, at 6s ; 20 fat cattle, at £3 5s to £5 10s — equal to 17s per 100 lbs. Horses. — The demand continues good, both for draughts and for strong upstanding litrht harness horses. On Saturday we sold at our yards, on account of Mr Andrew Lennox, a team of six heavy draught geldings, at from £34 to £52 10s We quote first-class draughts, £50 to £60 ; medium, £25 to £30 ; good hacks and light harness horses, £20 to £25 ; medium, £12 to £16 ; light and inferior, £3 to £6. Wool. — Two public sales have been held this week, but not much business done. What wool was disposed of was at a decline of 2d to 3d per lb en February rates. We sold several small lots of wool, sheepskins, kc, as follows : — Greasy wool, 9id to lOd ; washed, 18d ; sheepskins, 5s 3d to 5s 8d each ; pelts, 6d to 14d ; hides, 16s to 25s ; about 5 tons tallow, at £22 per ton ior inferior, and £32 15s for good quality. Grain. — Wheat is in good demand, and commands from 4s 6d to 4s 9d per bushel. Barley (malting) scarce, and worth 7s 6d per bushel. Oats — Very few offering ; milling may be quoted at 2s l'Od to 3s ; feed, 2s 8d per bushel.
