MELBOURNE.
The Argu» of the 29th ult. reports : — In the import market business has been extremely quiet, and little of any special importance has been allowed to come before us throughout the day. Breadstuff's are very saleable, but the difficulty of getting hold of anything like parcels effectually precluded sales from being carried through Flour is quitted at prices ranging from £13 to £13 10s, according to brands, but the demand is limited to supplying actual requirements. Wheat, however, is very much wanted, but though the agents' stores are in many instances as full as they can hold, the farmers refuse to sell, and notwithstanding much eagerness to purchase being evinced, no sales can be recorded, though up to 5s 8d can be got for prime quality. Oats are firm, and sales can be made, according to sample, at prices rising from 3s 4d to 3s Bd. The market is very bare, arrivals from New Zealand having been exceedingly trifling. Maize is quoted at 2s lid for parcels to 33 for email lots. Recent arrivals per steamer have been cleared off at our quotations. Sales of feeding barley are recorded at 4s 6d. Malt is selling at 12s 3d to 12s 6d for brewers' parcels ; a line of about 1200 bushels, medium quality, was cleared off at 11s 9d. Sugars continue in good request, and trade parcels are moving rff very freely at all prices, ranging from £36 10s to £41 10s. In liquids, Tennent's ale meets with a good inquiry at 13s for spot parcels. We hear of a shipment to arrive having changed hands on private terms. Hennessy's case brandy continues to meet with a good deal of favor at our quotations of 26s to 26s 3d — a parcel of 500 cases is said to have been placed. 800 cases MartelTs brandy have also been taken up at a full figure for ordinary-sized lots. 23s ii now asked.
