THE SALMON OVA.
♦ A fresh attempt, says the Home News, is being made to transport salmon ova to New Zealand. Mr Youl, who bas had more practical experience in such matters than any one else, bas given the agentgeneral his co-operation and assistance in the present undertaking. The Oberon bas been chartered by Messrs Shaw, Savill, and Co., with special regard to ber sailing qualities, and at this moment active preparations are going on for the reception of tbe ova on board by tbe 19th instant. An ice-house, constructed on scientific principles, and capable of holding 25 tons of ice, has been erected in the forehold of tbe vessel ; and fishermen well skilled in the delicate manipulation necessary in taking and artificially impregnating tbe ova, are at work in various parts of the country, the necessary permission having been obtained from the ■everal boards of conservators. As tbis is the third attempt of tbe kind tbat bas been made on behalf of New Zealanders (tbe two former ones having failed through detention on the voyage), we sincerely trust it will prove successful, and that the salmon will become acclimatised in New Zealand waters, for which tbeir appearance would seem to indicate a perfect adaptability.
