medical, 4cc APOTHECARIES' HALL, DEE STREET, INVERCARGILL. 2b the Inhabitants of the Southland IHitriet of the Province of Otago. WE HAVE ON THIS OCCASION determined to draw attention throujh the Public Press, rather than by circular (in consideration of the scattered nature of the population), to the entire change in the conduct of our Business, which was intimated so far back as May, 1871, but the misfortune of the lamentable Tay-street Fire of October the 11th, of the same year, frustrated for twelve months the completion of plane then about to be initiated. THE CONSTANT COMPLAINT of the community has been that Invercargili business men hold only a second or third rank, through the fact, in many instances, of prices ot various kinds of leading merchandise ruling higher here than in other towns in New Zealand. The real cause is apparent to those I Z watching the business career of the ULJ place, and can really be put down in a | great measure to the fact that there is a j "■" large amount of jealousy amongst those who have it in their power to metamorpfi phose, as it were, the business of the \J J district — by combination. Where one or two willing but small business men are inclined to go in for direct Home Z Importations, they are at a disadvantage, for the larger importers are not Oat one in this desirable course of action ; the consequence is, we have all along been dependent upon those who are reaping the reward of our shortcomings, Q whereas a market should have been made for ourselves (instead of bolsterZing up that of others), naturally making more important the trade to <the Ports of Bluff, Invercargili, and Riverton — each vessel, locally owned, always leaving the mark of prosperity behind her. With thes preliminary remarks, we are in a position to state that with the arrival of Goods per "HYDASPES," FROM LONDON, JUNE 21st, 18T2, THEBE DIFFICULTIES have been overcome. We shall then be in a position to do business which we could never touch before with profit, and in many cases either or both wholesale and retail prices will be considerably reduced, as it has been our steady aim to consummate this advantage to all, it being our in- ■» tention to give, where able, the whole of Qthe benefit derived from our satisfactory conclusion of business relations ||| with London direct ; we expect from _,_,_ the numerous branches of the com muf| nity, the support that we shall ~"* prove ourselves to merit, depreeating also the idea that the jealousy ~^ of lesation in this or that street should <^T be sufficient justification for the with- ■ drawal of support from one who has ■■■" buffeted tbe adverse current of events concomitant with the history of any new looality. Here we would wish to remind our constituents that until further notice is given, the whole of our business will be carried on in premises previously known as JAMES REED & CO.'S, and immediately opposite TULLOCH'S EXCHANGE BUILDINGS, and placing all articles at our disposal beyond a doubt as to their genuineness, which is always regarded as a boon in our particular line. IHB IMMENSE LENGTH to which the credit system has extended here, has also been a great drawback to business men, recoiling on those who have participated f^\ in it as tbe primary cause of, and excuse "^ for, higher prices than would remuf"" l^ nerate the importers, if sure of a speedy ~~ return — even when the goods were disQj posed of. The reductions in our prices, jZ£ which will now vary from ten to twentyf"j five per cent., which partly represents the intermediate Wholesale Importers' Pi Profit, will correct this to a great t^ extent, and if fortunate in receipt of Goods per "Hydaspes," either at the m bloße of this or the commencement of tfj the coming month, our new principles II in Business will be inaugurated with LLJ the new quarter on the first of October (\ next, immediajjfr at the close of our Ua . financial yeaePTnd stock taking, prior tf\ to 1 which date, to enable us so to Idb, all accounts as now rendered 4^T should be settled within tbe month, as Q previous partnership, and the taking over of Mr G. M. K. Clarke's, and J. Heed & Co.'c business, as also the October fire, have caused some little I derangements. Entire New Books will be now opened, and the others, both for Invercargili and Riverton, finally closed.
