RIVERTON.
*" (fbom our own cobbespokdent.) Horomanu Patu and George Howell were charged on Monday last, before H M'Culloch, Esq., R.M., and John Petchell, Esq., J.P., with forcible entry into the Ferry House. Mr Wade appeared for the prosecution. The evidence previously taken in this case was read over, and some further evidence was taken. The accused were committed for trial at the District Court, bail being accepted in each case in two sureties of £15 each. M. Instone, J. Mills, and D. Campbell, were charged by Horomanu Patu with destroying the boundary fence around the Mauri reserve. Tbe informations in each case were dismissed, a question of title being involved, which placed the matter beyond the jurisdiction of a Magistrate's Court. The dispute has excited great interest here, and the approaching trial in the District Court is looked forward to with great curiosity. On the 14th inst., tbe School Committee for the current year was elected, consisting of the following gentlemen : — Messrs Wilson, Heid, Young, Robinson, Stuck, Petchell, Cassella, Murchie, and Waldie. Tbe retiring Committee were able to show a balance sheet free from debt, and everything looks promising for tbe current year. Mr Richard Bath, of Gummy 's Bush, met with a serious accident ou Monday last. It appears that he had taken shelter under a large pile of manuka timber from a hail-storm, when the whole mass toppled over upon him without a moment's warning, inflicting serious injuries. Dr Monckton was sent for from lnvercargill, and it is understood that Mr Bath is progressing favorably under his care. It is reported that we are shortly to have tbe long-talked-of bridge across the river, by way of a first instalment of the Orepuki tramway. Many especially of the South Riverton folk, are inclined however to think that this is too good news to be true, and decline to believe it until they see the tenders advertised for.
