WESTERN DISTRICT.
A meeting of settlers in the Western District was held on the 10-h inst at the Farmers' Club House, Jacob's Kiver, at which the necessity of making some improvements on the roads leading iuto Biverton before the winter season sets in was considered. Matthew Instone, Esq., occupied the chair. "While the roads are now in fair travelling condition, the experience of past years has shown that as soon as the rainy weather commences they will become almost if not quite impassable, and the farm produce of the district will be locked up, as much of it was last year, until next spring". Now of course is the time for effecting the necessary repairs ; but hitherto the favorable weather has always been allowed to pass without anything being done, and it was feared that the same thing would occur again unless some pressure were brought to bear on the Government to induce them to take immediate action in the matter. It was moved by Mr John Cummins-, and seconded by Mr James Mackintosh, "That this meeting endorse the steps taken by the meeting lately held at Biverton with regard to the Riverton and Otautau railway."— Carried. Mr James Hamilton proposed, and Mr F. Sutton seconded, " That this meeting urge on the Go ernment the necessity for immediate steps being taken to repair the main roads in this district during the present fine weather, as otherwise on the approach of winter they will become totally impassable." — Curried. Mr John Cumming proposed, and Mr J. W. Matthews seconded, "That the above resolution be forwarded to His Honor the Superintendent." — Carried. Mr James Mackintosh proposed, and Mr James Hamilton seconded, " That the following gentlemen form a committee to watch over all matters relating to roads, Ac, within the Western District, five to form a quorum, viz., Messrs Instone, F. Sutton, W. H.' Nurse, Fallow, Hopcroft, M'lntyre, Hamilton, Lyon, J. Cumming, Matthews, M'Kenzie, Dr Hodgkinson, and the mover, Mr Instone convener of first meeting." — Carried.
