| Public lictice. APOTHECARIES' HALL, DEE STBEET, INVERCARGILL. To the Inhabitants of the Southland District of ■ the Province of Otago. \\rE HAVE ON THIS OCCASION deterVV mined to draw attention throu'rh the Public Frees, rather than by circular (in consideration of the scattered nature of the population), to the entire change in the conduct of our Business, which was intimated so far <?-.> s May, 1871, but the misfortune of the lamentable Tay-street Fire of October the II th, of the same year, frustrated for twelve months the com. pjetioa of plans then about to be initiated. THE CONSTANT COMPLAINT of the community has been that Invercargill business men hold only a second or third rank, through the facfc, in many in-et-ancea, of prices of various kinds of leading merchandise ruling higher here than in other towns in New Zealand. The real cause is apparent to those . watching the business career of the LJLJ place, and can really be put down in a I great measure to the iact that there is a •""■ large amount of jealousy amongst those s^£ who liave it in their power to metamorZjZ phose, aB it were, the business of the \Jj district — by combination. Where one or two willing but small business men are inclined to go in for direct Home ■T^ Importations, they are at a diaadvans£m tage, for the larger importers are not Oat one in this desirable course of action ; the consequence ia, we have all along been dependent upon those who are reaping the reward of our shortcomings, O whereas a market should have been made for ourselves (instead of bolsterZing up that of others), naturally making more important the trade to <the Ports of Bluff, Invercargill, and Biverton — each vessel, locally owned, always leaving the mark of proaperity behind her. With thea preliminary remarks, we are in a position to state that with the arrival of Goods per "HJDASPE S," FROM LONDON, JUNE 21st, 1872, THESE DIFFICULTIES have been overcome. We shall then be in a position to do business which we could never touch before with profit, and in many cases either or both wholesale and retail prices will be considerably reduced, as it has been our Bteady aim to consummate this advantage to all, it being our in- •* tention to give, where able, the whole of Qthe benefit derived from our satisfactory conclusion of business relations ||| with London direct ; we expect from ~~" the numerous branches of the community» the support that we shall **— * pr»ve ourselves to merit, depreeating also the idea that the jealousy of location in this or that street should <^ be sufficient justification for the with- | drawal of support from one who has ™ ™* buffeted the adverse current of events concomitant wiih the history of nny new locality. Here we would wish to remind our constituents that until furrher notice is given, the whole of our business will be carried on iv premises previously known as JAMES REED & CO.'S, and immediately opposite TULLOCH'S EXCHANGE BUILDINGS, and placing all articles at our disposal beyond a doubt as to their genuineness, which is always regarded aa a boon in our particular lino. IHE IMMEJSSE LENGTH to which the credit system has extended here, has also been a great drawback to business men, recoiling on those who hare participated Win it as tbe primary cause of, and excuse for, higher prices than would renmnerate the importers, if sure of a speedy ■"™* return — even when the goods were dis- [\ posed of. The reductions in our prices, which will now vary from ten to twentyOfive per cent., which partly represents the intermediate Wholesale Importers' O Profit, will correct this to a great • extent, and if fortunate in receipt of Goods per "Hydaspes," either at the ■» close of this or the commencement of Cf\ the coining month, our new principles . I in Business will be "inaugurated with LLJ the new quarter on the first of October f\ next, immediately at the close of our \^m financial year and stock taking, prior ff\ to which date, to enable us so to do, all accounts aa dow rendered should be settled within the month, as Q^^ previous partnership, and the taking oyer of Mr G. M. K. Clarke's, and J. Reed & Co.'s busineesj as also the mm October fire, have caused some little I derangements. Entire New Books will be now opened, and the others, both for Invercargill and Riverton, finally closed. THE ATTENTION of tbe residents or town and the suburbs — Pattoral Tenants, Farmers, Diggers, Storekeepers, Brewers, Photographers, Cordial Manufacturers, Hofelkeepers, Surgeons, Hospitals, Druggists, and others, is directed to our Ivst of PATENT MEDICINES-— Drugs, Chemicals, Perfumery, Brv.shware, Dyewoods, Drysaltery, Medicinal Glassware, Mechanical and Surgical Appliances and Instruments, Toilet Soaps, Confectionery and Sick Room Requisites, Sfc. t 4"c, of which we are now DIEECT IMPOETEES, And enumerated more particularly in the columns of the Southland News, comprising as it does a shipment of ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY CASES AND CASKS of well-assorted Goods, and of the DECLARED IMPORT VALUE Of £1000 STEELING. JOSEPH HATCH & CO. September 2nd, 1872. SEALSKIN JACKETS AND VESTS. ACTING upon the desire of several enquirers, wishing to obtain a genuine article, manu> factured from skins locally taken, the undersigned now intimites that he has made arrangements with a London House, to complete, according to order, a limited number of Ladies' Jackets and Gentlemen's Vests and Cap*, in Sealskin. As this seaaon's skins are now being shipped, orders must be promptly given. Full particulars oh application to P JOSEPH HATCH. Dee-street, December 5, 1872.
