Public HaCice. APOXH^EriJILRIES* HALL, DEE STBEET, riTvTBRCARGILIi. To tie Inhabitants of the Southland District of ike Province of Otago. TI7E HAVE ON THIS OCCASION deterVV mined to draw attention through the Public Press, rather than by circular (in consideration of the scattered nature of the population), to the entire change in the conduct of bur Business, which was intimated so far otet ■- a May, 1871, but the misfortune of the lamentable Tay-street Fire of. October the 11th, of the same year, frustrated for twelve months the completion of plane then about to be initiated. THE CONSTANT COMPLAINT of the community has been that' Invercargill busi-neeß-men hold only » second or third rank, through -the iact, in many instances, of prices of various kinds of leading merchandise ruling higher here than, in vother towns in New Zealand. The real cause ia apparenjt to those 1 1 \- watching the bßsinese career of the ULJ place, aa J can' really be - ptffc down in a ; I great meaaare to the fact that there is a ■"" iMiiattjjun^ofJealousy.amqngst those "■ <^~ wtto'havVit in their power to metamorr^jT . ; phose, ; as it were, the business of the \/j district— by combination. Where one or twV willing but *mall- business men ■reTriclineli to go in for direct Home Z Importations, they are at a disadvantage, for the larger importers are not Oat one in this desirable course of action ; the consequence is, we have all along been dependent; upon those who are reaping the reward of our shortcomings, a - market-should have • been *--fmade. for. ourselves, (instead of bolster™JP ing up that of others), naturally _sr making more important the trade to <the Ports of Bluff, Invercargill, and Riverton— each vessel, locally owned, always leaving the mark of prosperity behind her. With thes preliminary remarks, we are in a position to state that with the arrival of . Goods per " H V D A S P E S," FROM LONDON, JUNE 21st, 1872, THESE DIFFICULTIES have been overcome. ' ~' We shall. then be in a position to do feuainea* which we could never touch before with/ profit, and in many cases either or both wholesale and retail prices, will be considerably reduced, as it has been our steady aim to consummate this advantage to all, it being our in--1 •> tention to "give, where able,- the whole of Qthe benefit derived from our satisfactory conclusion of business relations ||| with London direct j we expect ; from — -*B*- the "numerous branches of the comara.^nity, ; the- - support that we shall _r?fT_-prDve ourselves — to merit, depre- : ;^^jP i eating also the idea that the jealousy ~™ of location in this or that street should ■^^ • be sufficient justification for the with-. | drawal of support from one who has MH " buffeted the adverse current of eventß concomitant wilh : the history of any new- locality. Here we would wish to remind our constituents that until further notice is given, the whole of our business will be carried on in premises previously known as JAMES REED & CO.'S, and immediately opposite TTJLLOCH'S EXCHANGE BUILDINGS, and placing all articles at our. disposal beyond a doubt as to their genuineness, which is always regarded' as a boon in our particular line. 3HE IMMENSE LENGTH to which the credit .. system has extended here, has also been a great drawback to business men, recoiling on those who have participated in it as tbe jprimary eanse of, and excuse i V* for, higher prices than -would remuQnerate the importers, if sure of a speedy return — even when the goods were dis^ | Q posed of. The reductions in our prices, - whichwill now varyfrorii ten to twentyOfive per cent., which partly represents the intermediate Wholesale Importers' OProfit, -will correct this to a great extent/and if fortunate in receipt of Goods -per "Hydaspea," either at the -» close of r this or the commencement of t^\ the "coming month, our new principles , . in Business will be inaugurated with L|jJ^ the hew quarter on the first of October :■■ ft next, immediately at the close of our LL» financial 'year' and stocktaking, prior ff\ to wMch date, to enable us so M^ to do, r aH accounts as now rendered should be settled within the month, as previous partnership, and the" taking f~^\ o rer of Mr G. M. K. Clarke's, and J. Keed & Co.'c business," as also the October fire, have caused some little X derangements. Entire New Books will be now opened, and the others, both \s .•■ - 'for Invercargill and 'Biverfcon, finally closed. THE ATTENTION of the residents of town and the suburbs — Pastoral Tenants, Farmers, Diggers, Storekeepers, Brewers, Photographers, Cordial Manufacturers, Hotelkeepers, Surgeons, Hospitals, Druggists, and others, is directed to our list of PATENT MEDICINES— Drugs, Chemical*, Perfumery, Brushtoare, Dyewood*, Drysaltery, Medicinal Glassware, Mechanical and Surgical Appliancesaria" Instrument*, Toilet Soaps, Confectionery and Sick Boom Requisites, <$•<?., 4-c, of which we an now DIBECT IMPOBTEBS, And enumerated mor& particularly in the r columns of the Southland News, comprising as it does a shipment of ONE i HUNDRED AND FIFTY CASES AND CASKS of well-assorted Goods, and of tbe DECLABED IMPOBT VALUE Of £1000 STEELING.
