H.M.S. Glasgow, bearing the flag of Admiral Cumming, was provisioning at Colombo, and was to leave on the Ist December for Zanzibar to meet Sir Bartle Frere. Captain Tucker has been deprived of the command of H.M.S. Columbine, by a court-martial at Trincomalee, for leaving with the first lieutenant * on a shooting expedition. The lieutenant was acquitted. A case of small-pox waa landed at Galle from, the Bangalore after her last voyage. The steamer Elgin has been burnt near Aden. Seventy native Mabarajahs, Rajahs, and chiefs visited Bombay to meet the Viceroy, with crowds of followers. Rents and board commanded unparalleled prices. £1,000 per month was paid for bungalows. There was a brilliant assembly to witness the investiture of the Star of India. The Begum of Bhopal was an object of the greatest curiosity. She appeared thickly veiled. Lord Northbrook has stopped the construction of the state railways to reopen the question of gauge. The Jaugor Barracks, recently built at a cost of £166,000, have been condemned as useless. The various superintending engineers and officers concerned were punished. ..'""' An Indian Charivari has been established. The sailors are on strike in Calcutta. A Hindoo Widows' Eemarriage Association has been established in Bombay. Oil-gae, manufactured from oilcake I
seed, is being used on the Indian railways. Norton's tube wells have proven successful in Lahore. Liut. Bennell, 15th Hussars, haß been killed while steeplechasing. A Portuguese family has been poisoned by natives in Bombay. The post-office order system between England and India is a success. The first street tramway has been finished in Calcutta. There are Chinese riots again. Governor Ord proposes to establish a militia in which all Europeans shall be liable to serve. An artist of the Illustrated London News was present at the Emperor of China's marriage. Eoad steamers are successful at Tien Tsin.
