H.M.S. Dido, Captain Chapman, arrived here at 11 a.m. yesterday. She left Port Chalmers on the 14; h, having His Honor the Superintendent and W. H. Pearson, Esq., Immigration Officer, on board, who took this opportunity of visiting Stewart's Island in connection with the ppccial settlement about to be established there. After remaining some time at Port William, the Dido steamed for the Bluff, arriving as above. His Honor landed at 1.30 p.m., and was conveyed to town by special train. The Dido is a compo-aite-built ship, of 1300 tons, and 350 nominal horse-power, her actual indicated horae-power being 2518. Her armament consists of 6 64---pounder rifled guns, Woolwich pattern,and two 7inch 64— pounder rifled guns, carried on the upper deck, the two 7-inch revolving guns throwing double shell of 1611bs weight, the bursting charge being 131 ba of powder. She has also two light Armstrong firld pieces for shore service. Her email arms are chiefly Sniders, with cutlass bayonets. The Dido was designed by Mr Reed, late chief constructor of the navy, and was launched about three years ago, this being her first commiesion. She has iron ventilating masts with a ram bow, and is fitted up with all the latest improvements. She carries 190 souls in all. The following is the list of her officers : — Captain, W. C.
