MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 7th inst. reports : — In the import markets to-day there has been more inqui-y for merchandise generally, and a better trade has been done than usually happens on mail day. In breadstuffs a good deal of irregularity is allowed to exist. We understand, however, that trade parcels of flour are being quitted at £16 10s. In wheat quotations for fine samples range from 6s 3d to 6s 6d, but all the business reported has apparently been chiefly for export. We hear of a line of 7,000 bushels Adelaide having thus been sold in bond at full price ; another considerable parcel, say 5,000 bushels, is likewise stated to have changed hands, also lor shipment. The Clarence, we are informed, has been taken up to load wheat at Adelaide, this being the first charter of the kind this season. Messrs T. Brunton and Co., millers, of this city, have sent us for inspection a sample of the first new Adelaide wheat which has reached Melbourne this year. The shipment is made by Mr J. Darling, of Adelaide, and consists of only a few bags, it being intended for inspection, rather than "1386. The description is red Tuscan, and though of very fair quality indeed, yefc is not equal to the first sample shown of last year's growth, which happens, curiously enough, to be beside us, and thus we are enabled to compare the one with the other. Oats are steady at 3s 2d to 3s 41 for ordinary to good feeding samples. Maize meets with a fair amount of attention, some 5000 bushels having been quitted at 3s for quantities. In sugars considerable sales have been effected. We hear of a parcel of 1100 bags of brewing having been taken up on terms withheld. Some 700 mats and bags fine yellows were also placed at £35 10s to £36 10s. f lie cargo of the Bayonnaise, from Mauritius, amounting to 6446 bags, was submitted to public competition in the foreneon, and 5373 bags found buyers at 26s 6d to 27s 61 for medium to gool rations, 30s 9d to 31s 6J for low yellows. 3 ts 3d to 35s 3 J for medium to good yellows, 3is 9d to 35s 8-1 Sor medium grainy counters, 36s 6d to 37s 6d for good and 38s 9d for fine white counters, 36s 6d to 37s 6d for medium to geod grey crystals, and 35b to 35s 3d for medium yellow brewing crystals. 490 bags low and irregular refining sugars, sold at same time, realised 27s 61, whiie low yellows "Were placed at 31s 9d. Kerosene oil has attracted a good deal of attention, and we hear of some 3000 cases Pevoe's brilliant having oeen placed, in parcels of 500 cases, at Is lid to Is Hid. A shipment of 1200 cases American salmon, just arrived, has, we learn, been quitted at full prices. In liquids we hear of a fair parcel of pale brandy, "La Grand Margue," having been cleared out on terms "withheld; the importers ask 5s to 5s 2d. The brandy as it becomes known gets better liked, and of late the enquiries experienced have been more numerous. The sale of wool held at the stores of Messrs Hastings Cunningham and Co. this afternoon had a very good attendance of buyers. The catalogue offered contained 1350 bales, of which 950 bales were sold at auction. The biddings were animated, and full market value obtained for every lot sold. Prices are tolerably steady at the rates ruling last week. Greasy brought frpm lid to 14 Jd ; scoured, 18d to 26 j d ; fleece, 20d to 26d per lb.
