ARRIVAL OF THE SHIPS CHRISTIAN M'AUSLAND AND PALMERSTON AT PORT CHALMERS.

THE PASSENGERS PLACED IN QUARANTINE. The members of the Otago Board of Heal tli proceeded in the steamer Peninsula to the ship Christian M'Ausland, on the 6th inst., which had been placed in quarantine the day before; and after making all necessary enquiries from the Surgeon Superintendent, and satisfying themselves of the existence of scarlet | fever, steamed for the Quarantine Islar.d, and inspected the buildings now in course of construction there, and made arrangements for the reception of the passengers, or such of them as it might be thought advisable to locate there. The Board then returned to Port Chalmers, and met at the Resident Magistrate's Court, when the following resolutions were passed : — " That the whole of the passengers, with the exception of a few in the cabin, be forthwith removed from the ship and detained in quarantine ; that the single men be accomuio<Ufced in lighters to be moored off the smaller island ; that the married people, single women, aud children be placed on the large island. The married people to occupy the ground floor in both buildings, the single women the first floor ; that all articles of clothing in use during the voyage by persona infected be destroyed, together with their bedding ; that the clothing and bedding of all the other passengers be disinfected in the hot air chamber on the island ; that 72 stretchers, tent accommodation for 50, and a bale of blankets be ordered forthwith and Bent to the island ; that lighters for the accommodation of 100 men be provided forthwith, and temporarily fitted up ; that the ship be thoroughly cleansed by means of carbolic acid, and afterwards fumigated with sulphur ; that it is desirable that a sergeant of police be placed in charge of the large island, and one constable of the small island, and that His Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to give eflvct to this resolution ; that some competent person be appointed storekeeper on the large island during the continuance of quarnntine." The Board then adjourned till Monday nest at noon. Immediately after the adjournment, the long-expected Palmerston put in an appearance, and, after hemp visited by Captain Thomson and Dr O'Donoghue, was placed in quarantine, there having been forty- two cases of sickness, principally scarlatina and typhoid fever, with thiricen deaths, during the voyage. The Board of Health again met, and resolved that the ship Palmerston be detained in quarantine and subsequently removed to the Sandspit ; that the last case of scarlatina, reported by the ship's surgeon as convalescent on the 2nd inst., be removedat once from the ship to the quarantine island, and placed under the charge of the surgeon-superintendent of the Cnristian M'Ausland, who had offered to undertake the duty.
