THURSDAY'S FHOW.

The sixth exhibition of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held in the Society's grounds on Thursday next, 12th inst. The Southland district has, since the inauguration of these exhibitions, under the fostering care of the Society, maintained, not merely a respectable, but a first-class position in relation to the developing of progress in agricultural and pastoral pursuits. It will be remembered that at the ■> commencement of the Society 8 operations, the field was somewhat contracted, yet its earlier exhibifcious were so undeniably successful as in some degree apparently to justify the conclusion by the few persons who ordinarily are to be found with the wet blanket ready for every new enterprise, that it could not be

expected that the interest would be maintained. The experience of each successive show has, however, proved that, if such an idea were ever seriously entertained, there were not sufficient grounds for it. A marked feature of the shows that have hitherto been held in Invercargill, has been that each show has produced its own special and distinguishing characteristic. "Whether the point of advantage of the year has been " draught horse" or " thoroughbred," " shorthorn" or " Ayrshire," " ]on£-wool" or " merino," the europss in the department has been so decided and unequivocal as to secure a favorable verdict as to the firstclass producing capabilities of the district. In the arrangements for the forthcoming show, the benefit will be felt of the infusion of new blood into the directorship. The energy which has been put forward in the '' get up" of the exhibition has been co far responded to from outside, that it may be safely predicted that the eclat of the show will not be a whit behind that of any of its predecessors. At the hour of closing last evening, about two hundred entries bad been made in the different classes, and by the published arrangements it will be seen that care has been taken to avoid confusion, and to secure the comfort and safety of the visitors. The ground is in good order, and with favorable weather the complete success of Thursday's gathering may be fairly inferred.
