Public Notice» APOTHECARIES' HALL, DEE STREET, INVERCARGILL. To the Inhabitants of th# Southland District of the Province of Otago. WE HAVE ON THIS OCCASION determined to draw attention tbroncrb the Public Press, rather than by circular (in consideration of the scattered nature of the population), to the entire change in the conduct of our Business, which was intimated so far back as May, 1871, but the misfortune of the lamentable Tay-streefc Fire of October the 11th, of the same yea*, frustrated for "twelve months the completion of plans then about to be initiated. THE CONSTANT COMPLAINT of the community has been that Invercargill business men hold only a second or third rank, through the fact, in many instances, of prices of various kinds of leading merchandise ruling higher here than in other towns in New Zealand. The real cause ia apparent- to those . » watching the business career of the f I I place, and can really be put down in a | great measure to the fact that there is a •"" large amount of jealousy amongst those who have it in their power to metamor--7^ phose, as it were, the business of the \JJ district — by combination. Where one or two willing but small business men are inclined to go in for direct Home Z Importations, they are at a disadvantage, for the larger importers are not Oat one in this desirable course of action ; the consequence is, we have all along been dependent upon those who are reaping the reward of our shortcomings, Q whereas a market should have been made iav ou*selve9 (ingtead of bolster' —rpf ing up that of others), naturally making more important the trade to <the Ports of Bluff, Invercargill, and Riverton — each vessel, locally owned, always leaving the mark of prosperity behind her. With thes preliminary remarks, we are in a position to state that with the arrival of Goods ]ier "HYDASPE S," ■■ t FROM LONDON, JUNE 21st, 1872, THESE DIFFICULTIES have been overcome. We shall theo be in a position to do business which we could never touch before with profit, and in many cases either or both wholesale and retail prices will be considerably reduced; as it has been our steady aim to consummate this advantage to all, it being our in- »» tention to give, where able, the whole of Qthe benefit derived from our satisfactory conclusion of business relations Ijj with London direct ; we expect from 'f " the numerous branches of the cornmuf~*\ nity, the support that we shall * — prove ourselves to merit, depre- ~~^ r eating also the idea that the jealousy of location in. .'bis or that street should be sufficient justification for the withI di'awal of support from one who har ■i I buffeted the adverse current of events concomitant with the history of any new locality. Here we would wish to remind our constituents that until further notice is given, the wbolo of our business will be carried on iv premises previously known as JAMES EEED & CO.'S, and immediately opposite TULLOCH'S EXCHANGE BUILDINGS, and placing all articles at our disposal beyond a doubt as to their genuineness, which is always regarded as a boon in our particular line. THE IMMEJMSE LENGTH to which the credit system has extended here, has also been a great drawback to business men, recoiling on those who have participated ff\ in it as the primary cause of, and excuse for, higher prices than would rerau- /"" \ nerate the importers, if sure of a speedy return — even when the goods were disO posed of. The reductions in our prices, whicb will bow vavy from ten to twentyfive per cent., which partly represents the intermediate Wholesale Importers' O Profit, will correct this to a great extent, and if fortunate in receipt of Goods per "Hydaspes," either at the •■> close of this or the commencement of Cf\ tne coming month, our new principles . in Business will be inaugurated with 111 the new quarter on the first of October /«| next, immediately at the close of our LJm financial year and stock taking, prior rr\ to which date, to enable us so *» J to do, all accounts as now rendered <^ should be settled within the month, as -«*,. previous partnership, and the taking LJ orer of Mr G. M. K. Clarke's, and J. Ree d & Co.'s business, as also the S*"* October fire, have caused some little —!'■ derangements. Entire New Books will ' be now opened, and the others, both for Invercargill and Riverton, finally closed. THE ATTENTION of the residents of town and the suburbs — Pastoral Tenants, Farmers, Diggers, Storekeepers, Brewers, Photographers, Cordial Manufacturers, Motelkeepers, Surgeons, Hospitals, Druggists, and others, is directed to our list of PATENT MEDICINES— Drugs, Chemu cals,- Perftmiery, Brushware, Dyewoods, Drysaltery, Medicinal Glassware, Mechanical and Surgical Appliances and Instruments, Toilet Soaps, Confectionery and Sick Room Requisites, S(c, Sfc, of which we are now DIKECT IMPOBTEKS, And enumerated more particularly in the columns of the Southland {News, comprising as it does a shipment of ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY CASES AND CASES of well-assorted Goods, and of the DECLARED IMPOHT VALUE Of £1000 STERLING. JOSEPH HATCH- &•' CO. September 2nd, 1872.
