FREE TRADE IN GRAIN.
(to thb editob of the times.) Sib, — Having always had a deep interest in the permanent prosperity of these fair islands of the sea in which my lot has for some years past been cast, and having noticed with much surprise that latterly there seems a disposition on the*, part of those engaged in the management of political affairs to retrograde in their legislation, I fancy the present is an opportune time to bring to the notice of the general com in unity some of the weighty arguments in favor of free trade in grain made use of by that recognised authority, Mr M'Culloch. I hope you will not think me obtrusive in drawing your attention to the present aspect of the grain trade of Europe, as rendering the present time peculiarly suitable for urging on the general public the incontrovertible truths exhaustively urged by Mr M'Culloeh on tkis subject. Had our neighbors in Australia weighed these truths a little more deliberately, they would probably have paused ere they plunged into their protective tariff policy — at any rate, in so far as regards the staff of life. — I am, &c, Big Cheap Loaf. Invercargill, 14th Nov., 1872.
