MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council was held on the evening of Tuesday, the 12th mat, when the following members were present : — Councillors Gurthwaite (ia the chair), Uoss, G-oodwillie, Tapper, Lumsden, and Pratt. Councillor Lumsden proposed, and Councillor Tapper seconded, that the rate on the town assessment should ba Is 6d in the pound. Councillor Rosa moved as an amend* ment that ther rate should be 2a in the pound for this year. Seconded by Councillor Pratt, and carried, the votes baing recorded aa follows : — For the amendment, Councillors Pratt, Blackwood, Rosa, an 4 Good will Jej against it, Councillors Lnmsden and Tapper. The Council then went into committee, when, on the motion of Councillo* Boas, seconded by Councillor Tapper, ifc was: resolred that the Council should borrow money on debentures in order to carry out public improvements in the town. . The Surveyor, in conjunction with the Public Works Committee, was requested to prepare a modified report reducing the estimate for works. It was decided to inform the Surveyor that in estimating for me tailing or gravelling any street, 18 feet should be the maximum width, -except in the case of Tay street, which should be 20 feet wide. The Surveyor's attention was directed to be called to the proposed main drain in Kelvin street, with the view of securing the drainage of the eastern portion of Tay street. On Thursday evening the Council held the usual weekly meeting. There were present the Mayor, and Councillors Blackwood, Garth waite, Goodwillie, and Lumsden. The Mayor was requested to communicate with the railway contractors with the view of carrying out certain suggestions of the Town Surveyor with regard to level crossings at the intersection of the streets with tho railway line, and the construction of box-draias under the earthworks. It was resolved that the Surveyor ba instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the formation of Conon street from Fortb-sfcreet to the Town boundary, and of -Porth-streefc from Nith.atreat to Ness-street — Councillor Blackwood voting against both propositions. , On the motion of Councillor Good-. willie, seconded by Councillor Lumsden, it waa resolved that the Town rate ba payable on or before 31sfc January, 1873. Councillor Lumaden asked for a suspension of the standing orders to enable him to move tho following motion : — " That the Mayor be authorised to communicate with the Engineer of th 6 Dutiedin gasworks, with the view of ascertaining whether it will be convenient for that gentleman to visit this town to advise the Council as to the plan and cost of gasworks for the town, and as to the professional charges on which he would agree to do the same." Leave granted, and motion carried. The Council adjourned shortly before midnight.
