MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 4th inst. reports : — Little indication of a desire to operate in the import market was evinced this forenoon. Traneactionß in consequence l»&ve not been of an important character. In breadsfcuffs, values are extremely weil supported, and no symptoms of giving way are apparent, though a quieter and steadier feeling has taken the place of the excitement lately prevailing. A line of 100 tons flour has changed hands at £18, but trade parcels continue to be taken up at £19 10s to £20. Wheat is still Tery firm, though the paucity of supplies keeps business in check. Quotations are .steady at 7s 3d to 7s 6d for New Zealand and Tasmanian ; at 7s 9d for medium Adelaide, and at 8s 3d for prime samples of northern. Oats are moving off freely enough ; a line of 400 bags ordinary feeding was quitted at 3s 4£d. Maize is very dull at 3s lri, a price which it is said loses money to the importers. Candles are in slow pale, inquiries — generally speaking — being on a trifling scale ; we quote ll£d to Hid, according to brand. Blasting powder is valued at lOf d for Hall's, on the spot; business haß been reported, to arrive, at 9id. For teas we note a moderate trade inquiry. Sales of fair medium congous, new season's, ex Adelheid, are mentioned at Is 6d, in half-chests ; good common, in half-chests, also has likewise been placed at Is 3d. In liquids little has transpired ; Hermessy's brandy in case is offering at 26s without meeting a ready response.
The following is Messrs J. H. Clough & Co'a station produce report and price list, dated NoTember 2 : — Wool. — There have been two public sales held this week, at which 2995 bales were catalogued, and about 16C0 bales changed hands. The attendances o£ bnjers -were numerous, and great interest continues to be displayed in the progress of the sales. The news, however, by the submarine telegraph has not been of so promising a character as desirable, and prices have suffered to some extent, as buyers are not disposed to pay the extreme rates ruling at the early sales. The high quotation in the home money market — 6 per cent. — has had a disquieting effect, end much uncertainty appears as to the prospects of trade after the February sales. Prices ruling have been — For greasy, lOd to 14f d per lb ; sconred, 18d to 2s 3*d do ; Seece, lGd to 2s 2f d do. Sheepskins.— With, a full supply of etina, we have to report that during the latter part of last week there was experienced a serious decline in prices, which has, however, been partially since recovered. Some of the fellmongers, turning their attention to greasy wool, have not been in the market ; and the fact that wool produced from skins now selling cannot be got forward in time to reach the February sales in London, has also had its effect on prices. We have sold at the following rates, viz. — For butchers' green skins, 3s 6d to 7s 6d each ; station skins, 6d to 9d <3o ; dry skins, 3s to 6a do. Hides. — A brisk demand has continued during the week at our sales, at which we have had a full supply, the local trade taking up all offered at full .prices, which are — For ox hides, green, 24s to 36s 6d each ,- covr hides, 18a fco 209 do ; •wet salted hides, 4£d to sid perlb; calfskins, 6d to 7*d do. Tallow. — At our sale ou Thursday, we submitted about 60 pipes, the whole of which was cleared off.; prices are not well maintained, and we had to submit to a further reduction. The condition of the fat stock now coming forward causing "an increasing supply, and the demand is not so brisk. We quote — Inferior, £26 to £29 per ton ; mixed, £33 to £34 do ; beef, £33 10s to £34, 10s do ; mutton, £35 to £36 10s do. i
