Auckland, Oct. 24. The navvies on strike held an excited meetiug to-day, at which there were 200 present. It was resolved to stand out for the eight hours' labor, with 7s per day wages. It was determined also that other men should be prevented from working After the meeting, 130 navvies did try to deter the men employed from working, but stampeded immediately the police put in an appearance. Chbtstchuch, Oct. 21. At a large meeting of the city ratepayers, a resolution was carried against the establishment of a tramway through the main streets. There were only two or three dissentients. Dunkdin, Oct. 21. Three men have arrived at Queenatown from Martin's Bay. They rep )rt that the steamer had not arrived, and that deaths from starvation were imminent; when they left, especially among the chidren. A new morning paper is projected by a limited liability company. The lumpers have struck for higher wages.
