ADDITIONAL SUMMAEY. We take the following from the Otago Times: — By the explosion of a powder mill at Houston, four lives were lost. The building strike iv London continues, and a strike mania prevails throughout the United Kingdom. 150 feet of tho eastern roof of the great cathedral at Canterbury has been destroyed by fire. The mosaic pavement of the cathedral was covered with molten lead, and considerable damage was done by the water. Fortunately the remainder of the building was saved. News from Cape Town reports the continued success of the Diamond Fields. The Queen has presented Mr Stanley with a gold snuff box and a letter of thanks. The inhabitants of Sedan are draping their houses in mourning in commemoration of the capture of the French army there. It is stated that tbe evidence adduced at Marshal Bazaine's trial proves that he held traitorous correspondence with the Germans prior to the fall of Metz Tbe payment of 500 million francs of tbe French war indemnity has been effected. Owing to the determined preparations for defence made by the King of Abyssinia, no Egyptian force entered that c v - try. Mexican news states that Diaz refused to accept the offered amnesty, and fled to the mountains. Confidence in the Government is improving. The small-pox is causing fearful ravages in Chili. Ihe Cuban insurgents are massing ail their forces to attack Cinco Billate. Havana is overrun with scoundrels of every description, and murders and robberies are constantly being committed. New Zealand flax, ex City of Dunedin, was sold as follows : — J. D. X., £36 ; T.K.8., £35; S., £35; Ash, £35. Ex Warrior Queen, S., £34. The circular of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. (Limited) reports an increased demand for preserved meats. Stocks are large, and the month's arrivals and deliveries are about equal. 21b, 4!b, and 61b tins should be packed together in executing orders. Beef and mutton, in small tins, fetched 6£d to 6|d per lb, and in large tins, s|d per lb. In wool, we see no cause for apprehension of an immediate reduction on late prices ; but if the next year's production is so much increased as to alterthe condition and supply, the present ' rates cannot be relied on. The arrivals for the next sales amount to 73,605 bales. New Zealand Phormium has fallen from 40s to 50s per ton. New Zealand Securities — January-July, are at 110 to 112 ; do., March. September, 112 to 114 ; do Consolidated, 102 to 103 h Bank of Otago shares are at \\ discount, and Bank of New Zealand shares are at £18 5s sd. Shares in the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., and in . the New Zealand Trust and Loan Co., are at |- premium. Dunedin and Port , Chalmers Eailway Mortgage debentures 1 are at 90.
