The Council rejected the Permissive Bill and the Labor Bil\ and struck out the main principles of the Mining on Private Property Bill. Tenders have been accepted for tho construction of 34 miles of railway, from Newstead to Maryborough, and from Burrumbeet to Beaufort. The rate for the former is £2700, for the latter £2LG4, per mile. Alexander and James Govan, tallow manufacturers, have been committed for trial for a conspiracy to defraud. The Australian Alliance Insurance j Company has declared a dividend of 10 j per cent., besides carrying £32,000 to I the Reserve Fund. i Der Haga, formerly of the Lyster Opera Company, blew out his brains yesterday. The sales of New Zealand wheat amount to over 12,000 bushels, the greater portion of which was purchased for shipment ; prices ruled up to 6s 6d. The oat market is dull. The revenue returns show a net increase for the year of £212,461. Bank stocks are in demand for investment. A Ballarat firm has accepted tenders to construct fifteen locomotives, not to cost over £50,000. Sydney. The Rev. Adam Thomson is appointed Principal of the Presbyterian College. Last quarter's revenue was the largest received here. Eapid progress is being made in the construction of the new armed schooners for the South Heas. More diamonds have been found at Oberon. The Brerrsrer's cargo of Californian wheat has been sold at 5d 9d. Scott's section at Mount Pleasant has been formed into a Company with twenty thousand shares, ail of which were taken up in two hours. The Consolidation Loan Bill has been read a second time. The Adelaide Cup, two hundred soys., with a sweepstakes of fifteen soys. added, is to take place in May. Bishop Quinn of Bathurat is likely to fill the vacant Roman Catholic Bishopric. A telegram received on the 4th from Palmerston (Roper district) states that dissatisfaction is expressed at the alleged non-existence of alluvial goldfields, and many of the miners are returning without visiting the fields. Captain Westcott and other miners are satisfied with the reefing prohpecLs, and are collecting quartz for crushing. There are above 60 men in the vicinity of Yam Creek. The statements at Pulmerston concerning the diggings nre satisfactory. All is quiet. Nothing has been heard concerning the interruption of tbe submarine cable. The Legislative Assembly has agreed to give a bonus of £1000 for the first 1000 tons of flix produced in the Colony. Wheat is ut 5s 6d.
