Henry I'odson, miner, at present living in Livere&r^ill, stated thut lie was in company with tlia prisoner when he was arrested on Monday evening at the Southern Cross. Visited the prisoner in the evening at the lock-up. Prisoner asked tim to get a lawyer. Said he ha.d no money to pay <a lawyer. Prisoner told him to go to an eaiptr house near the Melbourne Hotel, and he.would find, in a boot, under the flooring, plenty of money to pay a lawyer. Went to the place, found the money in the boot produced, but on coming away arae seized by Inspector Fox and Sergemt Fleming, who made him give up the money, and to save himself he had to explain how he came by it. Identified the property produced, the crooked sixpence, the wutch-ksy, and tho purae. Sub-Inspector Fox stated that the prisoner was brought tc the office with two other men on Monday afternoon. Prisoner refused to give his name, or any other information. On being oearche.i ho was found to have nine shillings in silver upon him. In the evening witness and Sergeant F.eming watched the witness Hodson from the lock-up ; found him coming out of an unoccupied house, near the Melbourne Hotel, and took the money and property produced from him. There were two half-sovereigns, a bent sixpence, a watch key, and £3 12s in silver, in the purse. Later in the evening, accompanied by Sergeant Fleming, witness visited Mrs Lang. She described the property, and subsequently identified it when shown to her. The leguings produced Sergeant Fleming and witness found in a swa?, in the <mmc of a wa^gjn neat- Shepherd's, on the East Pvoad. Prisoner was committed for trial. Amelia Williams, a little girl six years' old, was brought up by the police, as an unprotected child. She was an illegitimate child ; her mother had left the country, and she had for some years been maintained by a Mrs Creedon, who was unable any longer to do so. His Worship said that tho child had net been shown to bo without protection or home, and that the law did not authorise him to interfere. The child ~nn& accordingly taken away by Mrs Creedon. Hamilton v. Roche. — Claim for £17 8s 3d. Defendant did not appear. Judgment for plaintiff, with cost 3, 19s. Wednesday, 16th October. Amelia Williams, the little girl brought up on Tuesday, was again brought up by the police, having been found wandering in tho streets. At the request of Sub-Inspector Fox the case was remanded for a weak. Burrows v. Roche. — Claim for £14 17s 3d, goods delivered. Defendant did not appear. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs, 19s. Morton and Pickford v. Murdoch. —Mr Matthews tor plaintiffs, Mr Macdonald for defendant. On account of the absence of two material witnesses for the defence, this case waß adjourned to Monday next.
