LATEST TELEGRAMS.

Auckland, Oct. 3. Mr Anthony Trollope, in replying to a toast at a banquet, spoke eulogistically of the men of the colonies, especially New Zealand. He expected to find the people here earnestly carving out homes, having no time for literature, but he was surprised at finding the works of leading English writers, also his own, in almost every house he went into. He believed the colonists were better patrons of literature proportionally than the people of Britain. If New Zealand knew well how to borrow, she also knew how to spend, aa seen by his own observation, in roads and other works. If the great scheme was carried out faithfully, as it had been begun, he believed it would repay our debt twofold. Ho hoped the two islands would never separate ; and said he believed the colonists had dealt fairly by the Natives. There is great dissatisfaction here with the Public Works statement, as it ia felt that the South is favored at the expense of the North Island. Napier, Oct. 3.
